There are also curtain fabrics opaque as well as semi-transparent with with fire proof impregnation. I only know the names in German unfortunately. Maybe ask at a fabric store if you wanna go for curtains.
If you would like to go for white cabinets and may not gonna paint them you could exchange the entire fronts if that's not bursting your budget.
I personnally would try to go for folding doors or sliding doors if possible. Nifty roller blinds could also work.

How Do I Hide the Kitchen in My Studio Apartment? Good Questions

If you're open to get something new (you obviously are) then I'd get a bed sofa that will work both in a living room and bedroom. maybe even a bedsofa version of the karlstad so it will match the sofa you already have. you could even exchange a bedsofa for both the daybed AND the living room sofa and remain with one thing. ...and sleep in the living room.

or if you don't want to make huge changes - maybe try to make the daybed look more like a sofa by using a huge cotton spread. and instead of a clip on lamp you could mount it to the wall (see Ikea Kvart spot, it offers both options) or if you are not allowed to drill in the walls try a floor lamp (by chance there's also a Kvart standard version). I think both lights look less like dorm room and more like living room.

Hanging an eye catching large picture I think is also a good idea.
(maybe from a yard sale, craigslist, ikea artwork or a random poster in a huge frame (ikea ribba?) to keep it affordable).

Maybe get a neat and simple box on wheels to store beddings (if needed) and that will work as a coffee table at the same time.

But again, I personally would go for the more space saving option of having one piece in one room and thus get a bedsofa and exchange it for both the bed and the current sofa.

(btw sorry for all the Ikea advertising here)

How To Successfully Swap Bedroom and Living Room Functions? Good Questions

how can one treat animals like that?
the idea with divorced kids in mind is surely kind of interesting in a cyincal way but i don't wanna see products like that going on sale.

on tv i saw platform shoes with living fish in the transparent platforms once. it was somehwere in japan i guess.
these things are wrong.

respect life!

this one is my favourite of the finalists. love how vintage and modern melt together. very vivid looking home with a lot of nice details.

too obvious ikea mfor me. guess i've seen the large expedit shelvings a couple of times too often.

also don't like the style mix in the living/dining area.
the coffee table has a 60s retro flair while the sofa has a strong countryside feel to it.

the only thing that matches between coffee table, sofa and ding chairs is the white color, which but isn't enough to convince me.

well, i have exactly THIS shelf and it is still packed cuz i never used it. i could put it on ebay but i live in germany and i have zero experience with shipping to USA.
i fear this would be very high shipping costs. but if you care you can get in touch with me.

I'd paint the grey walls
white or pastell tones if you're allowed
and add tons of plants
and install a cozy/vintage/diy looking
fire place for bbq-ing.

i'd change the furniture eventually, too.

or hang a large painting over the entire wall and use the alcove for hiding secret stuff or any bulk...

I'd personally put some indirect lighting in there so that you just see the light but not the source of it...

...then I could imagin to put any collection in there for example. such as
-vases in colored glass (they'd go well with the indirect light)
-framed photographs that lean onto the back wall. in several layers maybe
-any decor items...

but i'd also get a tiny telly in there. i have a tiny one and i love its tinyness more than any wide screen comfort. but that's me and my thing for vintage 70s gadgets and my bohemian style...

good luck, show results! it seems to be a nice place.

I hate laminate floor generally!! MAJOR DESPISE ;) !!!!!
Here in Germany almost everyone has it.
People even put it over vintage hardwood floor instead of sanding out the beautiful, warm and natural wood material.
Sure laminate floor is a clean way to renovate but I would be very unhappy to have to live with it. It's plastic. It's a fake. A photo of a tree cut to pieces.
I hate the sound it makes under the feet and the way it looks after a couple of months in use.

I THINK LAMINATE AND INGRAIN WALLPAPER ARE THE MOST OVERRATED HOME ELEMENTS OF OUR SOCIETY.

thanks for posting the mug but
you got me wrong - my family hasn't got a long "mug tradition"

!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

i was just saying that this mug has survived several generations
and that the mug is 'located' in my family's weekend residence.

best wishes, Ram

"I just love this picture of Ramonah's bf's flat."

His sister painted the walls like that and I bought and hung up that lampshade.

Happy to be on your site -
(let me know if there is AT Germany or -Europe.)

best wishes,

i think most of the problems with houseguests come from hosts
being too polite and unable to clarify their borders and own needs to make this work.
if someone would come and waste my place all over i think
i would not hesitate on putting them into a hotel or such.
sure they'd be pissed but recall: they started it.

i would try to make things clear before someone comes and
think they can behave like locusts and other vermin.

from my own experience i can say
this can be tough even if they behave nice, like
bring you gifts,
help you with groceries,
clear up the bedroom...

although everything was just fine i felt a little awkward
throughout the whole time (talking bout 1 week)
cuz my 2 visitors weren't so close friends.
it was nice and we even laughed a lot but it wasn't all the same wavelength it seems.
and we hung out a lot together. i had time and i wanted it but it still was awkward.
so i quickly started to miss having time and space for only myself.
and i was glad when they were gone.

but i would still do it again.
but maybe next time my houseguests should be people i feel more connected with.

(and of course, no junkies, locusts, cycos, etc.)
