Easy--I count how many things I really, really need so I can remember them (bleach, apple cider, toilet paper, cat food---four things). Then I can be as random as I want with everything else. When I get to the check out, all I have to do is remember the number--in this case four--make sure that, at a minimum I have those four things and then I'm good to go. P.S. I learned to cook in the tiny galley kitchen in our apartment in Yonkers. Both my parents are very good cooks but it is more my father who was inclusive in the kitchen. He was off on Mondays so he always cooked that day. I remember a recipe from a McCalls magazine in the mid 70s that he made many times. It involved mincing a dill pickle and reducing heavy cream to make a sauce for boneless chicken breasts. I would get sent to the deli in my school uniform to pick up the pickle and then tasked with stirring the cream until it reduced. The kitchen, although still tiny, was recently renovated and Brian and I went over to their house and cooked fish and chips for my parents last weekend. We made a mess (and cleaned it up) and had a ball. And it was really nice to see my Dad and my man in the kitchen cooking together. Coming Home to My Mother's Kitchen |
