I have to agree with this comment. I have seen a lot of these posts on how lovely it is to turn a closet into a nursery, but have always wondered if it's considered safe or allowable. Thanks for making this point. I know in most cases it probably never becomes an issue, but those regulations are in place for a reason. Before & After: Closet Turned Nursery |

Growing up in a home of the same vintage, and then now living in new construction condos, it was hard to get used to the house being so quiet at night. And then, if there was a noise, it was almost more concerning because you couldn't just blame it on the creaks of an old home. So now we just blame the cats (who are usually the culprits anyway.) But windows that actually lock the first time you try them is really nice. Old House Habits Die Hard |

I love the idea (and just wrote my son a 6-month birthday card for him to open later - I couldn't wait until a year!) I do agree with the burying in closet option though. My sister, best friend and I made a time capsule in grade school and buried it in the backyard. At 18 we were moving so we went outside to dig it up and couldn't find it anywhere! Granted, as grade schoolers our measuring techniques might have been off, but we also realized that burying it near a few trees was problematic because as the trees grew the roots may have shifted the capsule's location underground. We never found it, but that is probably ok, as we had intended its audience to be some future, coincidental stranger anyway. Since this is something you will want to find later I recommend burying it in the closet or maybe at Grandma's house or something. A First Birthday Time Capsule |

We used to live on the same block and the "cheetah house" as we called it was the perfect landmark. I once told a friend driving to our place, "If you pass the cheetah house -- and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about when you see it -- you've gone too far." Sure enough I saw their car zip by our place, then back up down the street moments later. Un-missable. We liked having this house on our block as part of the personality of the neighborhood. And I confess that when our neighbors in the cheetah house had a yard sale we went over...not because we really needed to buy anything, but just to meet whoever lived there! And they were really nice folks! Is There a Line Between Quirky and Eccentric? |

I've had mixed experiences: great raw silk curtains, but sheets that lost their color in the first wash, even when I'd paid a lot for them. TCS was mostly helpful with the return process when I complained, so that's a response that puts them in my favor overall. I'd caution on C&B flatware, we registered for a whole set when we got married. Only to learn later that "hand washing recommended" is a kind way of saying "your flatware will come out looking rusty and like nothing you'd ever want to give to a guest if you put it in the dishwasher." We spent so much money on the set so I don't want to just ditch them, but it's really tiresome to handwash them when there's a perfectly good dishwasher right underneath the counter. (Mission flatware was the style we'd selected. It's discontinued now, but again, I'd be careful!) Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: Identify this Flatware? |

At first I looked at the pictures and thought these would be the plates the Obama's were bringing in, and I kind of paused and thought, "really? Michelle chose that?" Apartment Therapy DC | Look! New China for the White House |

Thanks so much! There are so many great ideas (and maybe some that are simple or obvious, in reflection.) I was having a mental block to these creative solutions. I definitely have a lot of options to consider. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: Obscuring the View From Outside? |

I love the Tepper Jackson Luggage Tags - bright and distinct! (but sometimes $17.) Flight 001 carries lots of unique tags and luggage (leopard print!) and they have a retail store here in Chicago, as well as online shopping. Apartment Therapy - Designers Guild Travel Goods |
