I'm in the middle of painting my tiny bedroom walls - finally! I initially painted them a pale soothing lilac but my bedroom is south facing (I'm in Oz) and it was cold and bland.
Fed up with my wussy choice after 5 years, I let AT rule my reason and have gone dark and deep - Resene 'Blackberry'.
Sigh. And fingers crossed.
And I agree with Sherrybinnh & Millislim - how and when you use the space does govern your palette. I focussed on sleep and rest, so a bold jewel colour should look magical at night, dramatic and cosy.

Spooky! I just caught the end of an exhibition by Linda Zarb at the 69 Smith St Gallery in Melbourne. Sigh - Robbie the Robot, Daleks (eep! love) - my heart goes all gooey for a bit of sci-fi. If only I was rich - who had to resist robot art?

This wonderful teeny space that reminds me of an Edwardian city flat - lots of furniture, the new and old blending very nicely - a little bit Merchant Ivory (all those subtle textures and shapes in muted colours and no naked walls).
Kudos to Charlotte for producing great results in a truly small space. (I love love love).

I've been into all the Aesop stores in Melbourne and they have to be experienced to get the full effect. The photos don't do the space justice. Yeah, it's weird and alien, but it's also intriging and unique. And smells amaaazing!

Great post

I'd actually like to install one of the window seats in my living room corner (pic 3).

Has anyone had any experience/war stories regarding quoting and specifying one?

I am a little daunted by the prospect price (I'm shugging my shoulders at this - I get the feeling it's not going to be a cheap install for a chunky slab of polished wood).
Also, any ideas on what best to ask for - drawers? lift up bench? media units? bookshelves?

Many thanks for any pointers AP people.

Thankyou for this post - I'm in the middle of trying to psych myself up to wallpapering my little bedroom and now you've made it harder! The House of Hackney may be poised to empty my bank account in exchange for a roll or two.... *shakes fist with a smile*

I bonded with a friend over The Royal Tenenbaums and those kooky interiors. Sigh!
And I agree, the house from Practical Magic (yum). And the greenhouse (actually the whole apartment) from Green Card - so lovely.
But I've always wanted to live in the Addams Family house (movie and series), but any old spooky abode/laboratory is fine by me (practically every inch of the Harry Potter interiors, esp the Black family home...). Double sigh!
Ah, through film, i can have an Edwardian laboratory, some bubbling beakers and mad scientist to call my own.....I also have a fetish for the set from Young Frankenstein!

I love this website, but what i really love are posts like this - proof (or acknowledgment of) amongst all the lovely composed pretty shots of homey-niceness there lies a slice of the 'kitchen underbelly'. And no matter how house proud we are, in a small apartment, this must be a common sight (both before and after).
My domestic unmentionables have been banished to the garage. Another horror we dare not speak of....

Lovely post - sigh, who doesn't love thunderclouds?
I'd love a huge (no, make that humongous) image of boiling thunderclouds clouds on my bedroom wall. Does any one have any leads where I can lay my grimy little on one?

Wow, reminds me of the horror movie my kitchen renovation was - and it's almost a carbon copy in style, colour and layout, except this is a much bigger kitchen.
Love the countertops and the overall sense of space - nice and simple.
The only difference to me, where the microwave is, I have a glam little bar.... i can have delightful drinkies to cook with!

Nice work and my deepest understanding with regards to your trials and tribulations - the unending dry in southern Oz means everyone I know who is renovating is have issues with loppy floors and walls, and cracks in walls that have appeared overnight. Anyone who can endure a renovation, no matter how big, deserves a medal for sheer endurance.

I will never renovate again.
Unless I have a drink to fortify me first....... : )

I have got to say thankyou for the Home Hacks series, especially this one - nice, clean instructions with pics.
I am one of those shameful can-do types but I can't do this.
Good work!

As a tall girl, a tall long bed means plenty of room for me, and being able to swing my long legs out of bed each morning at just the right height.
Bliss.
And there's a certain aesthetic grandeur, if that makes sense. Scale is important, and I'd feel weird sleeping in something too low, like I was crawling on the ground.

However, the short low bed is also a great thing and not to be dismissed.
I was asleep (and a little drunk) in my futon in Japan when a earthquake struck (thankfully, I was not living in the epicentre, but living many kilometres away).
It was my first earthquake, and my apartment shook like Barbie's dreamhouse being demolished by an angry five-year-old, but at least I wasn't thrown out of bed. Where would I fall to?
Everything else got trashed, but I was grateful.
Hooray for the low lovely futon!

Thanks for the post AT.
The need for sound sleep in a busy city is a problem i never knew until i moved into a rapidly growing inner city locale.
Now it is a corner stone for keeping my sanity.

(Ah, sleep - so underrated!)

Thanks to a HomeMedics sound spa, I can't sleep without the sounds of industrious crickets wittering away to block out noises (courtesy of my insane neighbours, a fire station 2 doors away and the dinging of trams rushing past). Bless their little electronic socks.

I highly recommend some form of white noise for good sleep - i never had it before and now i'm an addict.

Loved the comment about the horror movie heartbeat.
I tried the babbling brook/waterfalls mode first and found I didn't sleep, but did have to fight the urge to pee ..... not good for blissful sleep!
