I grew up in a fairly modern house - 1950s, but built by a rocket scientist (no relation), so surprisingly ahead of its time. I'm totally hooked on vintage and history, so needless to say I jumped at the chance to live in a victorian house during university. While my landlord was wonderful about fixing everything that went wrong (and very promptly with no extra costs to us), soooo many things went wrong purely because of the age of the house. I loved it and its many quirks but I would suggest thinking twice about overly romanticising old places. Plumbing was especially difficult because the pipes were built considerably smaller in those days and are not compatible with many modern systems (the apartment had to run on a saniflow system - not sure if anyone's had to deal with these before... not the best idea). I think we would have left if our landlord hadn't been so great about getting things fixed right away. This was really a total fluke since we did not get a chance to look round for very long (in competition with six other interested parties who were all viewing it at the same time) and we signed the lease the next day.
Not sure I will ever want to live in another old house... but who knows. Something to be somewhat wary of though.

ChiquitaHannah:
I managed to kill a succulent. That is how black my thumb is. Terrariums are good because they are pretty self-sustaining... at least the ones that actually shut, because they keep moisture quite well (maybe too well. Mine is looking like a tropical rainforest: warm and misty).

I also agree with SherryBinNH. [That is not to say that I am ok with not seeing the floor because of all your stuff... no dirty clothes visible (boxers on the floor? gross!), and a clean bathroom is a must.]
HOWEVER, if I am interested in being in a real relationship with a guy, I want him to be himself around me. I want to be part of his life - not an awkward house guest. If he's a slob, I want to know that from the start. If we're intimate enough for me to be staying over, we're intimate enough for me to know how he lives. Plus, I know I'm guilty of having a mess (not dirty!) place once and a while.

I'm confused: according to Karen Kingston, we're supposed to chuck out old books, to make room to go out and buy her book?

p.s. I whole heartedly agree that the last picture is very cluttered and makes me feel almost claustrophobic.

I like having a desk in front of a window... I would go nuts looking at the back of my closet, not to mention that it gives me claustrophobia just looking at these pictures.

@ kamilya - I found your response to this topic interesting. One of my art teachers used to say that the reason he didn't allow people in the room who weren't planning on drawing was because they became voyeurs. As someone who has drawn many a nude, I can tell you that the artist is focused much more on lines and shadows than the fact that the model is nude. Many models are themselves artists (most of the ones at the classes I took in college were actually in the class). If we're talking about objectifying people, I would go after mainstream advertising way before this.

btw. I am a woman, and resent the notion that "it's usually male artists and female models".

I have a guilty confession to make: every time I manage to find more room to store all my books, I celebrate... by going out and buying more books! I can't help it!
I've been raised around books my whole life (my mother threatened to cut off my pocket money as a kid if I couldn't learn to read slower... a new book a month is an expensive hobby for a kid). My only problem is organization. I recently tried using the Dewey Decimal system on my own books (yes, I know I'm a dork, thank you), but because I collect mostly fiction, this is not the best (plus it's a pain trying to categorize them). I mainly go alphabetical by last name, which is useful, though not necessarily aesthetically pleasing. My sister color codes hers, which leads to beautiful shelves and a horrible time finding anything. In my dream home, I would solve the problem by devoting an entire room to my books.

Bunnies are great apartment animals! If you bond well they will great you when you get home and come cuddle with you. I know some bunnies who sleep in bed with their humans! When neutered/spayed (which is a much healthier option for them) they will liter-box train themselves. But please don't keep them in cages! They live much longer without them (you can put up pens for them to run around in when you're out of the flat).

And, as with all animals, please PLEASE check out your local pounds!!!! I volunteer at one near my house, and we get all sorts of animals besides dogs and cats: snakes, guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, etc.

I personally think putting nudes in the bathroom/bedroom and hiding them away makes them feel much closer to pornography than just having them as wall art in the living room. It's a human body - hopefully we all have them. I think they only become offensive when we try to pretend this isn't so.

Like many of you have posted above, I don't mind the Orleans Wrought Iron Tub, but am I the only one weirded out by glass bathtubs? I just don't like the idea of a see-through tub for some reason.

I have to say that I still love my one red accent wall in my bedroom in my parents house. I would not be able to deal with more than that one wall (and it's a small one at that), but it did a great job of separating the sleeping part of my bedroom (the red) from the working area (kept white). It's important to have this distinction when one room has to fulfill both functions at once.
