I recommend the peapod for both sleeping and on the beach. Our daughter used one from about 6 months through 15 months. The best part is that it is so small and lightweight, it can fit right in your suitcase. I think once they are too big to sit up in the tent, they don't want to be in it. You may want to measure how tall your child is sitting up and check that against the height of the tent... We bought a mini crib for my parents place. My daughter is 18 months right now and she fits in it quite comfortably. The best part is that it is very portable, so we can move it from room to room at their house depending on how many people are visiting. It could also easily go into the trunk of a car and we could travel with it. At $200 (including mattress and sheets), it was a good, affordable option as compared to a regular crib. I was just looking for pendants for my own apartment. My favorite is the Blossom Pendant from www.stonegatedesigns.com. It comes in an orange/silver pattern or a green/silver pattern which would look fantastic in your room. The price is steeper than you want to pay, but you can always go straight to the designer...
