Some things I'm getting this year for the 5-8 year old set:

First Journal or Diary

Eeboo's Tell Me A Story Creative Cards

Spot-It Game

Rosie Flo's Coloring Books

and for the 8 year olds (or a little more advanced readers), the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio -- a MUST GET for your 8+ year olds.

This is ridiculously misleading! She did not renovate her bedroom for a smidge over $100. She renovated her entire bedroom and one - admittedly, great - FEATURE of said bedroom was a smidge over $100.

For anyone else to accomplish such an amazing before and after, they would have to have a smidge over $100 for this FEATURE, plus an additional $1,000+ (conservative estimate) for a new bed, lamps, curtains, bedding, rug, and other accessories. OR, have $1,000+ worth of these items somewhere in their house they're not using.

I think this is a great idea and does show how a little money can make a big impact, but the presentation as a bedroom makeover takes away from that.

tablespoonfuls = tablespoons

Sometimes I make up words.

Brine & Beyond: Juniper Berries

I always use juniper berries in my Thanksgiving turkey brine (a modified version of Martha Stewart's recipe for turkey brine). Since I typically only use them once a year, I buy them at the bulk section of my Whole Foods or Central Market. That way, I only pay for the few tablespoonsfuls I need and it typically costs less than a dollar. I've often wondered what else they would be good in!

I pre-ordered three of these books (two to give as gifts) with much excitement and I cannot tell you how disappointed I am. I usually love anything published by McSweeney's but this book does not deliver.

They are awful! It is a huge understatement to say it takes a fair amount of rubbing to get the hidden messages to appear. It took my husband and I on average 2-3 minutes of rubbing one small area to get anything to appear legibly. Show me a child who wants to wait 2-3 minutes to uncover each small area of text/pictures when there are 5-6 small areas per page?!

The hair dryer does work, but c'mon!! It's not exactly convenient or easy to read to your child with hair dryer in hand or safe to let your little ones use a hair dryer by themselves. I guess for a one-time novelty type thing, this book is okay. But, I feel it was such a waste of money and will not be giving them out as gifts.

You can try tile tattoos - http://www.2jane.com/Mibo-Tile-Tattoos

They are removable and won't damage the tile when you take them off. The only tricky part might be getting the right size.

This might be a dumb question, but we have a room with painted over wallpaper and it appears our previous owners did a good job of painting because unless you are really, really close, you can't see the seams at all and there is no bubbling, peeling or cracking. Our problem is the paint color is a hideous brown that doesn't match with the furniture we have.

Can you paint over painted wallpaper?? What about wallpapering over painted wallpaper?

I'm trying to avoid the removal process if at all possible!

Agree with elizarock and gracie - cute idea, but very poor execution, in my opinion. Well, I should say that we've only read the Good Night Hawaii book (received as a gift), so the others might be better? But the one we have could in no way be compared to Good Night Moon.

Used to have a Babymel Amanda but it just wasn't well thought out in its design. Now I have a Skip Hop Studio Tote and love, love, love it! Mine is in the chocolate brown color - looks very stylish but I love it because it's so cleverly designed. http://www.skiphop.com/product/21500.html
One large outside pocket with snap is used to store all my stuff (wallet, makeup bag, phone, etc) and is easily accessible -- i.e., no digging around. Several small outside pockets with zipper for small things (pens, checkbook) that I don't use everyday, one of which is perfectly sized to hold 5 cereal bars/teething biscuits and three snack-size containers of snacks. Two side outside pockets that fit a bottle or sippy cup perfectly but discreetly so that even with sippy cup in tow, it still looks like a handbag. But the genius of this bag is the inside pockets. Four very large pockets - one holds the changing pad (included with bag), one holds 5 diapers, one holds my diaper wipes and one holds small toys and my flip camera. We haven't even gotten to the main compartment of the inside of this bag, which to be honest, I only use to throw an extra outfit and bib into.
I love that absolutely everything has a place in this bag and that it doesn't scream diaper bag and is affordable!

Another Flip user and huge fan here. We have the Flip Mino HD and I cannot tell you how much we use it. It's the single best purchase we made in preparation for our baby. He's just over one year old and I can't believe all the great moments (first smile, first steps, etc.) that we caught on camera because it's just that accessible and easy. You pull it out, turn the power button on, hit the big red button to start recording, turn the big red button to stop recording. That simple.

Also, I cannot emphasize enough how easy it is to upload and share the videos. It plugs directly into your computer and automatically uploads the videos. Then, with one click, your video is shared either via email, youtube, facebook, whichever social media venue you want to use to share it. With one click!! Soooo easy.

One of my friends recently told me about this idea she and her husband do with their families. As a nod to the three presents given by the wise men, each child gets three presents:

A Gold Gift: something that is precious to the child - something s/he really wants (bike, etc.)

A Frankinscence Gift: something for the spiritual development of the child since frankinscence was used in worship (a bible, a journal, a book of bible or moral stories, or whatever else fits into your family's spiritual paradigm); and

A Myrrh Gift: something for the body since this was a lotion (a sweater, robe, etc.)

I really liked how this tied in the story of Jesus' birth with the gifts received on Christmas and was a good limit on the number of gifts, but it may not work for every family.

I definitely want to try these over the changing table and I love the idea of cutting them into shapes! Like jackied302, I would only worry about whether baby could easily remove them.

Also, I used etsy a lot when putting together my nursery. There are a lot of cute robot themed nursery items there. A quick search came up with crib bedding, prints and more -

I decorated the glittery pumpkins shown in pic 2, two years ago for Thanksgiving after seeing them in Martha Stewart's Living magazine. They were so easy and so gorgeous and I received many compliments on them.
