I'm still a student, and still get big refunds. My incentive to not procrastinate is getting my check in the mail, so I filed at the end of January and got my refund mid-February. Works every time!

This reminds me of the movie Fahrenheit 451, with the books hiding beneath the tabletop.

Nonetheless, I think it's pretty cool.

Hello Boston ATers...Does anyone have any tips on curbing dust? My tiny loft has very little ventilation, and the problem is exacerbated by the inability to throw open my windows every once in a while (and, of course, the blasting of heat). I feel like I'm constantly dusting and vacuuming to no avail. Any help?

My apartment is too dusty for this, and I think that my boyfriend would be likely to start putting things in the baskets...first as a joke, and then as permanent installations.

It is, however, very beautiful.

As a soon-to-be college grad, I've pretty much spent the last four years only buying food and toiletries (nevermind home improvement stuff--that's when you become really good at working with your realty company).

As an exercise in keeping mindless consumption in check, this experiment works. In today's economy, adopting this practice could destroy a lot of small, independent businesses. But could it also weed out some of the bigger corporations that don't really contribute anything to society except rampant consumerism and a 'keeping up with the Jones's' mentality (here's looking at you, Circuit City)?

And by looking more carefully at how we spend our money, and who we choose to give it to, can't we help change the way that products are made? By not buying cheap products made in sweatshops with life spans that hover around a couple of years, can we see a shift to products that actually last a lifetime and only need slight maintenance? I'm thinking about my grandmother's appliances from the 1950's that still run, while my mom has had to replace two refrigerators.

Maybe I'm being too idealistic. But I think that the problems in our economy could put us back on track, and take us out of a "BUY BUY BUY!" state of mind.

I don't know, I rather like being able to pile on blankets during the winter to add coziness. There's something about being a little bit cold that allows me to sleep really well, without interruption. When it gets too warm, I tend to toss and turn a lot and untangle myself from the sheets.

But a bath tub in the bedroom? Now we're talking.

Everything except for the bathroom is pretty boring. So, paying half a million dollars for a light-flooded bathroom? Kind of silly. But, it would be cool if my parents bought me a house. I am, after all, "throwing away money" renting every month, working my tail off just to live here. Must be nice to be a talented, privileged dancer!

This is so elegant, yet casual. It's exactly the kind of balance I strive to obtain in my own apartment: something beautiful that my boyfriend isn't afraid to live in. Excellent job, and so inspiring to see such a beautiful apartment in Cambridge! Makes me less weary about my coming apartment search.

That room is really charming, I love it.

In my imaginary guest room, there is a carafe on the nightstand with fresh water, some magazines to flip through (something my mom has loved when she visits), extra hand-knit afghans, fresh flowers from the garden (when I go home in the summer, my mother always puts lilacs in my bedroom, and it is heavenly), and a lightly scented candle.

No one would be visiting me with the intent of working while they're here, so providing comfort and relaxation to my guests are of utmost importance to me.

I just hook up my computer to my television and play the iTunes visualizer (the Magnetosphere is awesome). It's good to have on during parties, especially when you've already got a good playlist set up...sometimes we use Pandora, too, to mix things up.

If animation is your kind of thing, I'm sure there are already some trippy Escher-esque videos floating around youtube that would evoke the same concept as the Fornasetti art. $175 for DVDS? Hmm...

I love the chair in the budget room, although $850 is more than my budget for redecorating my entire apartment. Sigh. Other than the artwork above the mantle, though, I much prefer the budget room.

Boyfriend and I live a very environmentally responsible lifestyle, so I think that our mutual "resolution" is more of a commitment to continuing those practices and keeping on top of our electricity usage, waste, and consumption. We're also de-cluttering quite a bit, which has been amazing. As much as I love books, we've vowed to limit our purchases to academic related books, and instead will go to the library. I hope that it will cut down on the visual clutter of too many books in a small space, while saving us money.

I'd also like to personalize our space more. Because of space restrictions, and the fact that we're renting, we haven't made our home feel as cozy and warm as we'd like. Now that we've leased another year, and will be here through 2010 (at least), we're committed to infusing our apartment with our personalities through more thoughtful decor and paint.

And I plan on cooking a lot more, so that I can someday boast a cooking prowess rivaling my mothers.

I LOVE cooking to Nightmares on Wax. They are so groovy and epic and put me in this awesome zen state while I'm choppin up my onions.

And also, a delight that I've inherited from my mother: the Buddha Bar compilation cds. They don't fall into my typical musical tastes--think punk and early 90's rock--but for someone who cooks a lot of ethnic dishes, it certainly works thematically!

I'm making some toffee and fudge, gifted in some old tins I've collected, and then the mini panettones from the Martha Stewart holiday issue wrapped in some cellophane. And maybe a batch of mixed, spiced nuts. It depends on how much time frees up around the holiday crunch!

Thanks for posting my question! I'll definitely have to hop over to Whole Foods and pick up some paperwhites--I love the scent!

Also, braved the crowds over the weekend to find my tree. Both Home Depot and Target had plenty of options, and they were reasonably priced. I ended up buying a small real tree from Lotus Floral Designs, as the fake trees were a bit out of my budget right now. But I will definitely keep all of this in mind for next year, when I will (hopefully!) have the funds for a fake!

I really like the message and graphic (especially the bicycle! swoon!) of 'Simplicity is the key to successful living,' but I'm over posters like these (if I see another 'keep calm' poster, I'm going to barf). It's a great philosophy, but it doesn't mean you have to put it on your walls. And then see it on a million design blogs.
