No it won't, and no they didn't. I think if you painted that thing in a high-gloss white it would look sleek and modern for the rest of our lives. It could also be repurposed everywhere from the kitchen to the garage, and unlike a lot of (though certainly not all) IKEA furniture it looks to be practically indestructible.

Vinyl sounds like crap.

That having been said, I hate to see records chewed up by Crosley's junk. Spend a few bucks extra and buy a real turntable, not this cheap plastic record chewing toy.

That looks like an IKEA Lack shelf. If you bolt it to the studs in the wall - assuming you have wooden studs - it'll support tons of weight.

If you don't, well, it's an accident waiting to happen...

What a heinous little corner. Since you're gonna demolish it anyhow at some point, I say paint it at least (simplest, cheapest option). With the radiator right in the way though it seems like the space is too tight for that to be used as a seat of any kind. Maybe fashion some kind of painted, wooden top and place a large table lamp there? Or place a large vase on the top and hang a lamp from the ceiling down into the corner.

Good luck! Although almost anything would be an improvement.

I've been using CFLs for over a decade now - mostly cheap ones from IKEA at that - and I've never had any of the problems others report with color temperature or short lifespans. Last week I just replaced the first CFL to die since I moved to this apartment 4 years(!) ago.

I'm also not the least bit worried about the trace amount of mercury modern CFL's contain. It's elemental mercury, which is much less dangerous than the organic mercury that comes from burning coal, and which contaminates so much seafood these days. So long as you don't snort one if it breaks, you'll be fine. And they burn so much less power, even if you broke every one you used, you'd still be pumping less mercury into the environment than if you used incandescents.

That having been said, the LED bulbs are very promising, although what I'm really looking forward to are entirely new lighting fixtures that don't even rely on the traditional "lamp" form-factor, which LEDs are going to make possible.

Using a lossless format like FLAC or ALAC has another advantage - they support robust, standardized metadata (title, album, composer, track #, etc.). Uncompressed formats like WAV are much older, and any "standards" regarding metadata are not well-supported across a broad range of rippers, playback software or devices.

I looked into getting one of these, but couldn't really afford to give up any counter space. So I got an 18" portable model instead. Takes up a bit of space in the kitchen, but it gives you another work surface, too. It's a Danby. Does an incredible job washing dishes, considering the price, though the standard cycle does take F-O-R-E-V-E-R.

Doesn't use much power though, and it uses very little water. Like, not even half a sink's worth for an entire pots-n-pans cycle. Amazing. Far more water-efficient than I am when I wash the dishes by hand.

The value of used pianos is plummeting - older piano owners are dying off and younger people seldom buy them anymore. Why don't you look into purchasing (or rescuing - many pianos are just being dumped) a good used piano? You probably won't pay a lot of money for it, and you won't have to worry so much about having a "perfect" location for it in your home.

If you're really concerned, try having the insulation in that wall upgraded. That should negate most of the negatives associated with the piano being up against an outside wall (and could help with your utility bills, too).

The before was brown, battered and boring. The after is simply spectacular. Wonderful job!

Yeah, the first digital computer game - a tic tac toe game - was developed in 1952!

Spacewar - probably the first game modern players would recognize as a traditional arcade videogame - dates to 1962. Of course, in those days it took an enormous DEC PDP-1 to play such a game.

There were analog based videogames as well.

After decades of dealing with these damn things - and having ripped every disc to the computer already - I finally gave up trying to store hundreds of discs and their jewel cases. I bought binders, ripped them out of their jewel cases and filed them all. I kept all the inserts in little file drawers but ditched all the plastic (apart from a few unique cases).

One of the best decluttering moves I've ever made, and it made it so much easier for me to move back into a studio apartment a few years ago. I thought I'd regret ditching all those jewel cases. Nothing could be further from the truth. My whole vast CD collection moved in a couple of smallish boxes and took seconds to pack and unpack.

No way on earth are these things worth $400. You can get better for $120, like Audio-Technica ATH-M50's. They aren't ridiculously bass-heavy either, although I think they're capable of deeper and certainly more accurate bass.

The Beats earbuds are even worse, if you can believe it. Avoid them like the plague.

These things will revolutionize manufacturing. In theory you could print up something like a television or a car layer by layer instead of assembling individual components. Homes could also be printed this way.

Right now most of these gadgets are limited to using plastics, but it's only a matter of time before industrial models come online that can use materials like metal or concrete.

Alternatives to Apple's New Earpods:
Better Sound For Less Than $100

That's not true, Bruintoo. Apple isn't the only company to pay attention to design. Samsung pays great attention to design - Apple's designs, which it blatantly rips off (right down to the docking connector).

I'm delighted that Apple sued the crap out of Samsung, and hope they take them to the cleaners.

>And let's not forget that Apple's first computer was copied from Xerox back in
>the days...

Wrong. See The Mother Of All Demos. The concepts Xerox was working on in the late '70s had already been around the better part of a decade. Apple paid Xerox for a look at their work, then went off and developed the Lisa and Macintosh based on those ideas, but with major differences, revisions and improvements.

>Apple products are not long-lasting.

When it comes to computers and consumer electronics, I've never found products which last LONGER than Apple's. I have an 8 year old iPod that's still going strong - use it every day. I have friends using Macs that are 10+ years old - you're lucky to find a PC that still works after 5.

>The adapters don't support audio or video output,

Incorrect. They support audio, but not video. So for iPhone 5 users this'll be a non-issue. They'll just travel with an adapter.

No interface lasts forever. Same as it ever was.
