Ugh, every wall in my house is covered with this from floor to ceiling, plus a coat or three of paint over the top. I can't scrape it off fast enough. A little goes a long way, use sparingly.

I used to live in Echo Park (I miss Taco Zone) before moving to DC last fall. Before LA I lived in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. Hyde Park is very different from Echo Park in terms of aesthetics, but in terms of amenities kind of similar. Very diverse because of Univ. of Chicago in the neighborhood, lots of book stores where you can nerd out (Seminary Coop), variety of neighborhood restaurants (Florian, Snail, Ribs & Bibs, Calypso, Pizza Capri) and bars, art stuff (Hyde Park Art Center, Renaissance Society, Smart Museum, etc.). Depending on where you live, getting downtown on the bus (#6) or the Metra commuter train is easy, but you might like to have a car there as well for groceries and other shopping. Good luck!

my husband had an apartment with a very similar layout when he was a law student in Chicago. it was a sweet little apartment that we both loved! one thing he liked having was a separate work area and living area, so he made what would be the dining area into a study (desk, bookcase, computer, etc.). then he had a space to concentrate in, and a space to relax in. if your daughter will have to do heavy-duty studying at home, maybe she would like that separation too.

i second the idea to take off the small closet door so that the bed can go against the wall by the front door. you can use a reeeeeeally long co-ax cable and some cable tacks (they look like plastic U's with a nail attached) to be able to use the cable jack on that wall; just tack the cable neatly to the wall so it isn't out in the floor.

you've already got that beautiful blue chest, plus lots of neutrals. so you could make things seem really pop-y with some orange or rust accessories, or make it more serene with greens and other blues.

I just relocated for work, and I have the same problem with the apartment I moved into. I was initially worried that the place was going to be a horrible mish-mash once I got unpacked. However, I have been pleasantly surprised. Because my things looked good together to begin with, they still hang together fine in this new, contemporary space. The open-plan layout forced me to create more casual or flexible arrangements of furniture than I might have in a more traditional format, but it has been a fun challenge so far. I am also storing and rotating most of my art and knick knacks to cut down on clutter and keep the place looking more streamlined. I took ideas from various loft house tours on AT and the New York Times.

I kind of enjoy the juxtaposition of old and worn versus new and shiny. Good luck with yours!
