I had the idea to start a place like this a few years ago, but the rents were really high. They might be a bit more reasonable now, hmmm....

This is coming at a time when print media really seems to be in a desperate situation. I'm sure if their newspaper sales were better, they wouldn't mind the little bit of extra traffic to their site. But, seeing as how the site is free, and they're still trying to run a newspaper...
I think it's lame that they went over AT's head, but I understand why they're feeling extra protective.

I was thinkinf Franz Kline, too...
It's an easy DIY if you're artistically inclined, but not everyone is. That's like looking at abstract art and saying "my 5 year old could do that!".

I'm from NJ too, and this was done all the time in my neighborhood. I understand the impulse on the day of the first big dig, but people take it way too far and try save spots for a week!

This reminds me more of stuff you'd see in Urban Outfitters than at Ikea. Alot of the UO stuff looks cute in the catalog or online, but is pretty cheesy up close. The natural grouping looks promising. Does anyone know if Zara will be bringing their home collection to the States? That I'd love to see!

The mix of materials and finishes makes me guess "Now".

These are pretty, but I believe the original shades are glass, not plastic.

What's more shocking than all the pink in this space is the bitterness of all of you! I though AT-ers were of the "live and let live" sort who frown upon bashing the taste of others.
I guess that only applies to people without trust-funds.
I think if this were posted by a "regular" person looking for your opinion, you'd find more complimentary things to say. While it's not my particular taste, I do feel that Ivanka improved the layout of the space, creating "function" areas and a better flow, and it has a lot more personality now.

I just ordered a tea cart from Ebay! It should be coming any day now and I'm so excited. Our house is VERY small. We don't have an eat-in kitchen and the only room that provides enough space for a dining area is down the hall from the kitchen. A cart will be perfect for bringing things to and from.
The best thing about the one I'm waiting so anxiously for, is it's collapsible!

I think a lot depends on how many people live in the space as well. 850 sq.ft. may sound palatial to a single person or even a couple, but for a family of four, space could be an issue. The place could be oddly shaped. I think there still could be some design challenges to be found. It'll be interesting to see.
Is the contest really only for apartments? What if a house meets the size requirements?
