We just finished making ours. The final cost was about $145 with shipping, but totally worth it. Putting it together reminded me of nothing so much as tinker toys; really fun. I took pictures of a few things that I needed to have explained to me and posted them here.

Love this space! This is totally, wonderfully Dallas. Thank you so much for sharing where you get your finds in town - the suggestions so far in the comments are really great, too. We get great vintage home goods from D.O.T.'s Closet in Lakewood and out at the Canton Flea as well.

Does anyone know how to set up the tape to bring all the stripes to a point on the ceiling like that? I can't quite wrap my mind around it.

Thanks!

I was noticed for my odd lunches, but I really liked the spotlight as a child, so I basked. I thought it was my charge to teach my classmates about more 'exotic' edibles and would pass them around to share with my friends ("This is a lychee fruit. LEE-CHEE. Careful; there's a big seed.") Obviously, this was presumptuous and more than a bit snobby of me, but I l-o-v-e-d it, and at age 29 I've yet to grow out of the enjoyment of watching people try new foods :)

Little containers go m.i.a. around my house pretty quickly, but if I have the break-room salt on hand to add to the greens when it's actually time to *eat* the salad, I can pare down. When taking a pita salad to work I just take a single one for all the innards.

I put in the greens and other veg, oil, vinegar and whatever else I'm using in my dressing (spices, herbs, onion, garlic, etc.) Obviously, if you add ingredients like cheese or mustard to your dressing this won't work as well, as they contain salt, but otherwise when you get to it it's still fresh and crisp :)

My husband and I keep the ingredients for these on hand at all times. We're self-proclaimed aficionados. (Favorites; the Mississippi River Bar in the French Quarter - they won't tell you a single ingredient, but you can get them to-go. Mix -Mateo's - If you're lucky enough to live in Texas, they make a delicious one.)

We make them for brunches and surprise morning visits from friends. One introduced me to the drink ... with gin instead of vodka. I know, i know; it's completely blasphemous. However, I haven't wanted one with vodka since. If you don't have any good vodka on hand or have vodka haters in your retinue, give this a go.

I love the pallet one - making your own is so satisfying! My partner and I made a constellation headboard out of some old wood, paint, and a leftover string of christmas lights. It's not a work of art, but we love it. Sleeping beneath it is a reminder that we can do anything together.

Our St. Patty's day meal was this one; http://www.fresh365online.com/recipes/2009/3/17/irish-vintage-cheddar-and-beer-fondue.html. It's simple and fresh and good with beer. Maudite is my favorite with cheddar, both in the recipe and for drinking while you're eating it :)

@Craigslist Decorator - it's never scratched or left ink when I've used it, though those are good questions.

Newsprint has an ink drying agent that equals streak-less-ness when you use it to wipe off the cleanser. It's a wonder. Great for mirrors, too.

I love how this turned out. The knife strip as a scissors-holder is great. I use them for my sharp sewing supplies and it keeps them handy and safe. Great job, Chris!

I had a really girly vanity set-up, and I loved using it. It was really just an ikea wall mirror, chair and desk with a cover I sewed.

Messy? Probably, but in a convenient sort of way. I put my ipod speakers and coffee on it and always felt more relaxed sitting there rather than standing at the sink. For me, having my own space (and letting my husband take over the bathroom;) made getting ready at a leisurely pace easier to accomplish.

If you decide to paint the fireplace white, I'd suggest a slightly warmish light blue or green color like Behr's Caribbean Blue or Peridot would make the wood floors pop. (If you do go this particular brand, do yourself a favor and get the "premium plus ultra." It's more expensive, but it's been a one-coat-wonder ;) Good luck!
