When I moved into my first solo apartment, I had a "1 book per square foot" rule - which has long since been broken. I split my library into two functional parts: books for informational purposes, and books for enjoyment. These two chunks are housed separately in my apartment. Books for enjoyment are sorted by color, as I can often remember what the spine looks like before the author. These shelves are mainly governed by aesthetics instead of practicality.

For books I need to be able to reference often, I have a separate library in my office. These are grouped by subject matter, and then further divided into subgroups as needed - with name plates designating each area or shelf (found on etsy). To keep the bookcases from looking cold, I have little personal artifacts that relate to each subject mixed in. I have a clock depicting the moon landing in my science and tech section, a jar of lucky pennies with my books on finance and economics, a little statue from my first trip to Mexico with all my spanish language textbooks. Personal history/mementos makes it easy to find the book I'm looking for, and I think it also creates a really beautiful spot in my home.

thyme for savory, cardamom for sweet. I used them so often that they never seem to make it back in the cupboard.

I love them with a little cabbage, almonds and sesame seeds with some light dressing - usually rice wine vinegar, a dash of sesame oil, veggie oil, salt and pepper. It's a staple around my house.

Brussel sprouts with salt, pepper, olive oil, and a little lemon zest if I'm feeling fancy. Cauliflower tossed in olive oil and curry powder is another fave.

I love my hot water bottles! I plop them under the covers before I get into bed, and they're still warm in the morning. By far my favorite low-tech indulgence.

I, too, found inspiration from Miss Martha's tea cup jewelry storage idea. I use the cups for rings and earrings, and the saucers for bracelets and watches.

I usually take a little canister of tea leaves and a small framed photo of my mom, my sisters and me to put on my temporary night stand.

Right as I walk into my apartment is my piano. I turned it into a landing strip with a clipboard for outgoing mail, a mason jar for the day's change collection, a nice wooden bowl for my doggie's collar and leash, and an hors d'oeuvres tray with four little sections - perfect for my keys, cell phone, badge and sunglasses. The area is just big enough for things I need daily, but not so big that I can stash any clutter.

Thanks to my Day 7 Homework, I livened up the strip with some Mums. Only eight days in and I can already feel the difference. Thanks for the daily inspiration to get something done Maxwell!
