It helps to have those ceiling heights...and the views! And the color of the light...ahhhhh....

Color or no color--up to you, really. I've found that all white in person in anything but a southern exposure feels chilly, but if you've got south light...well, lucky you! You could even do art monochromatically--some photos done in sepia tones, for instance.

I'd buy/build in a sofa parallel to the window...it would have to skinny enough so the bed would clear and remove the side/bedside table with the lamp. A built-in with storage below and some big rectangular pillows could be efficient. If you use the bike, maybe try to find a screen to cover it?) And facing the couch on the opposite wall from the bed, put a chair/ottoman diagonally into the room. (You could always use the chair you have, but it feels a little insubstantial at the moment. Then get a nice light-weight coffee table that can be moved away when you lower the bed. Maybe a bench or two ottomans for additional seating.

A skinny table along the wall to the right of the front door will provide a landing strip and another place to add personality. Maybe a mirror above it? with art opposite? Or maybe there's no room--couldn't quite tell. Even a floating shelf would be handy.

I think you may find that having more furniture gives you a cozier feel...and if you don't do color, do interesting textures like velvet, leather, wool.

Headboard would be comfy, and you can add some lighting if there's room when the bed is up so you don't need a side table.

Have fun!!

Katie.t:

Love your spirit and your space!
Might I echo the Murphy bed suggestion? These days, they sell mecchies for them, using your own bed. Also, I'd do a horizonal Murphy...looks like your bed would fit that way against the wall, and then you could hang your TV above it--it leaves lots more floor space. I'd put the head by your close.
Also...it means construction of sorts...but have you thought about opening up an entrance to your kitchen from the entryway and closing off the entrance from the living room? That would give you one less door in the living room to deal with, and would accomplish two things: more room in kitchen for your table and chairs, and perhaps room for three (or even four) chairs, facing one another around an ottoman (round one?). Two would go in the Chairs could be relatively small, giving you seating but lightness; ottoman could give you one/two more seats. TV could also now go on the eastern wall--the one where the kitchen entrance was...
You could also do a banquette in the southeast corner of the kitchen to add to seating there and clean up the chairs...

We have a similar situation...so at the risk of repeating what's above (but I think slightly differently)...I'd put the courch with it's back to the windows, and behind the couch, hide the desk (center it on the couch) with the desk chair facing into the room between the radiators. That way, when you work, you're looking into the room (I find this much less claustrophobic than other solutions.
TV can go on closet jog...or diagonally in that area (I'd lose that piece of furniture and put it on a piece that's less wide). Center the bookcase on the wall it is now (it will probably end up just to the side of the coffee table area), put the chair facing the couch on a slight diagonal on the bookcase side, TV stand (now holding just stereo) centered on the wall opposite the bookcase (and directly across from it) with mirror centered above it and hung vertically, to balance the height of the bookcase. Can't tell what that little green thing in the plan is...next to the couch...but it it's a side table, it can go next to the green chair.
Phew. Ain't movin' furniture fun?
Hope this gives you a few new ideas!! :)

Puh-leeze.
Prospect? Yeah, if you're not in an apartment in which every window faces an air shaft. And peril? "Wild outdoors"? Well, I guess if big city noise and pollution (don't get me wrong--I love it!) qualifies...
Frankly, I hate this kind of pontificating. It starts out with no sense of the limits that most people have in their homes (and finances). Give me something inspiring that's a bit more universal, please...and that can fit my pocketbook!

I read AT to see the way other people live in their spaces, and to get ideas about my own. I actually now own a few items--a rug, a set of pieces I got from Craigslist--that I "found" on AT. But mostly, I'm a design junkie. I think that the design of the spaces we live/work in make a huge difference in how we function and how happy we are. I think smart interior design can make up for bad or indifferent architecture, bad lighting, lack of $$...in other words, a whole lot.
And I love reading the posts! For instance, thanks, xjessicax, for the Wes Anderson effect. I know exactly what you mean and feel the same way.

I don't think of myself as being attached to my stuff, although I'd be said to lose old family photos and papers...I have one box full of them.
But I do have a problem with give-aways:
I have a hard time giving away gifts.
Even if an item is inappropriate or downright ugly, if someone gave it to me, I have guilt feelings when I want to part with it.
This is truest of items given to me by my closest friends/family.

Love them.
Just hung grass cloth-like material on a wall in my apt....it was much easier than wallpaper and looks great. It's also a way to get some really high-end material up on a single wall without breaking the budget.

Great, great colors. But does anyone else slightly cringe at the books arranged by color (see website)? Looks great but makes me queasy.

Very cute apartment.
But the rug isn't a great one--if you stain the white part, it won't look great. We raised kids with patterned rugs...like kilims or oriental-type patterns--and found they hid a multitude of accidents. Didn't matter that they were wool...they cleaned up fine, and you could hardly see a stain anyway. I'd try a nice modern floral, given your color scheme.
Have to say that I have Flor, and it's not very soft or toddler-friendly.
Outdoor rug is an idea as long as it's nice underfoot.
Whatever you do with the curtains, just be sure they're either out of reach or really firmly anchored...toddlers tend to grab onto things to hold their balance, and the last thing you want is the rod pulling out of the wall.
And I'd highly recommend an ottoman as a coffee table--give you more seating and be truly toddler-friendly. This table can be saved for later...or maybe covered with something safe and used as a side table that's out of the way of harm.
Have fun!

Is anyone else noticing a new format in the slideshow? There seems to have been a design change, and now all the apt. therapy headings go on top, and you can't see a show without constantly readjusting your screen to see the full image. Impossible to use! What's going on, AT?

Only thing is...since it's the sides that are your problem, I'd hem an equal amount on both sides. Even if you're tucking the blanket in, it'll give you a more uniform, neat final look.

Boy. I just tried to lay out this piece in my small bedroom, and it pretty much fills the space!
Why don't you lay it out, using blue painter's tape, on the floor and the walls (for height)? I've done that, and it gives you a much better sense of exactly how much room you'll have left. Plus...I'd measure the amount of clothing I had and make sure this will accommodate what you've got and what you need it to store.
Good luck!

I'd cancel. Not that I hate Martha or anything, but the only issue that I'm the least interesting in is the annual decorating one, and if it looks good, I can buy it. The other issues only make me feel inadequate.

It's all about light, isn't it?
The colors I see (for instance, in the top sun room--I'm drooling on the keyboard right now) can't be reproduced in different lattitudes (I'm in the Northeast) or if you don't have the right exposure.

Sigh. I love my cats. But there are issues...like the fact that one just threw up a new-old mid-century piece and ruined the finish in two places (other than refinishing, by the way, anyone have some ideas? Oils don't work--I have two dull puddles on the top).
I offer this as comfort to all who have had the same issues: In a book on cat art I read awhile ago, an interviewee mentioned that he thinks of his cat scratches, messes, etc., as patina.
Makes me smile...and it really helps!
