I just ordered this keyboard and can't wait to get it. http://www.trulyergonomic.com/ Before this, I have used the kinesis freestyle keyboard for a couple of years and that's in for repair. Before using the kinesis I had all sorts of pains up to the shoulder too...once I used it, the pain went away! Ergonomic keyboards are very important! It's funny, but I can purge through all sorts of kitchen equipment, but I can't throw one cooking utensil out! I'm sure I have more than I need, and maybe I'm a utensil hoarder, but even if I use this one utensil once a year, I need it accessible, you know?? THAT is a wonderful kitchen IMO....it looks like an environment, not a strictly utilitarian space, but a warm, cozy, environment. It's the most difficult thing to design with restraint. This is a great example. I'd probably want to see a few rugs scattered about but otherwise, ove it. Kitchen Tour: Irish Culinary Celeb Rachel Allen's Kitchen |

Personally, I can't go down that black road, although I do LOVE the first image, but to live with every day-don't think so. Some touches of it, definitely...large blocks, no. However, if I had 3 or 4 houses, I'd probably do it in one of them just for fun. Come to the Dark Side: Black Kitchens |

I just moved my son and his girlfriend, a student starting a 5 year phd program, to a 2 bedroom apartment near DC. The second bedroom is a combined office/guest room. We ended up getting two IKEA dining tables to put next to one another along one long wall, one his, one hers and a window is in between. The tables are frosted glass with chrome legs, very stylish and about 30" or so front to back, nice and deep. Although they are starving young people, I convinced them to seek style as well as function. Two big white glass light fixtures hang from the ceiling. A bright orange rug and artwork is the next installation. They are thrilled, as function was much farther up on their list than style. Now they have both. LOVE seeing this and kudos to you for showcasing such talent that is not very well known outside of Scandinavia. I collect Scandinavian pottery from the 50's and 60s and own several of his pieces along with other amazing Scandinavian ceramic artisans. I'm thrilled to see this little tribute! Mixing metals has definitely been on the rise, great post and observations. Speaking of the kitchen, it needs to be done with care and attention to the style of each piece, especially if the theme is eclectic; then, it really gets tricky. Also, the size/proportion of the metals play a part...stainless appliances vs cabinet hardware vs lighting vs faucets/sinks. Looking at the role each metal element plays in terms of scale/frequency in the space, needs to be understood within the big picture. splatgirl, what a refreshing, flat out open, look at this issue. I applaud you for just being open to the concept of pro vs non pro, especially since you have a pro range. I just went to a Thermador press event. They have an element in their induction burner that goes to 4600 watts. That has to be very close to, if not beyond gas. That's really my point. Induction is very fast. That, plus a separate 36" oven (for your catering platters) and another small oven (or 2 30" ovens) is a very good alternative. The power that the pro ranges have always talked about is a plus, but I feel we have the power now with induction, which, to me, changes everything, at least in terms of the design of the kitchen not having to be all about big appliances. I am embarrassed to say no I haven't! But, it will absolutely be one of my next posts. I've certainly been dealing with my clients floors for years, however. Can you tie in the flooring color at all? You may be more sensitive to it than others are, I'll bet that's the case. Great points. I've never ever been a fan of pro appliances in general. I feel it "takes away" the soul of the kitchen and puts the focus directly on to the appliances. When I walk into a kitchen, I want to experience the kitchen as a whole, not hone in on the appliances. I think kitchens would be well served to blend in more with the surrounding spaces. Bigger is not always better. Now THAT is a personal preference, and not what is happening in the kitchens I'm designing for my clients. With powerful induction cooktops now, however, it's debatable where there is more power...in btus or in the powerful induction cooktop. So, who needs the pro appliances? clarityk, glad you like the posts, thanks for that. I do think white is very difficult to look after. I think if you have extremes in both...light and dark, they'll both be tough to take care of. But, you're right, even a white glossy surface, if it can be wiped down, will be easier to take care of than, say, a painted surface.
