what is the ceiling height in this unit? you may be able to slightly raise your bed (a few feet) to gain much needed shelving underneath it. this would also make it easier to visually separate it and allow the sleeping area to feel like it's its own space.

the number i got included a couple of million for the entire property, which includes the urban vegetable garden and all the way to the fire station. three more buildings are scheduled to fill this space. this number i got from a building tour earlier this year.

i used to like this building until i went in and they don't even have automatic controls. clean with aerosol sprays and a bunch of little things. oh, yeah, and the 197 million dollar construction cost tag. ouch. most expensive public housing, umm, ever. how many more people could it have housed with that budget and still have a decent beautiful living space?

this doesn't prove much for the necessity of a well designed building since it's just a show piece, or at least professionals in the design industry understand this, but what about others?

i moved here from houston this january. winter wasn't bad at all, but then again, i don't like hot climates. i can't wait till it starts cooling a little bit here.

this is my first summer in chicago. one of my first thoughts was a program just like this. i liked the program so much that i even though about seriously starting to search for investors and whatnot. i asked a lot of people for their thoughts it and the whole program just keeps getting shut down. the most common response was the liability issue. what if someone gets hurt on one of your bikes?

i think this type of program could either work magnificently or fail miserably. even if the program were to work, how long would it take for people to get used to it?

is anyone else as interested in this as me? anyone thinking about pursuing this more than a what if conversation on a blog?

Bike-Friendly Cities: Paris, Brussels...Chicago?

chicagores,

just make sure you don't hire BluChip. i hired them when i moved to chicago. I drove in a large rental truck and all they had to do was carry my furniture to a second story. it wasn't very tricky, but 50% of my furniture ended up scratched. they were very young and had little to no experience.

rebecca,
my ikea couch is three years old and the cushion feels as new. it's in prefect condition, it even survived the last move named above. with most you can change and wash the slipcovers, but don't look like those ugly fluffy couches with a sheet draped over. i am very impressed with ikeas furniture quality. i have shelves, desks, couch, matress, platform bed slats, and a couple of small tables. i haven't had a bad experience yet.

creative,

i make sure the sponge is dried fully after washing dishes and make sure it stays off the sink in a space where it won't get wet, just by the faucet. then every other wash, i microwave the sponge for 3 minutes. keep an eye on it as some sponges have plastic parts and will burn. i only had this happen once and it just left a little dark spot in the middle of the sponge. i don't have a problem with smell anymore.

we keep our outdoors in the backyard with plenty of lime. the smell was very strong for the first few days, but it didn't last. now there isn't any smell. the compost that seems to be working the best thus far is the one with only yard work waste such as mowed grass, clipped branches, etc.

i'd love to do this, but my wife is super sensitive to scents and can't stand "street" smell. she even complains when i come back from walking the dog.

as for the aesthetic, let's be realistic, most buildings in this city have little architectural personality and if they were gone, most wouldn't miss them. what's so beautiful here is the environment of pattern and culture within the pedestrian experience. adding a human scale level of cultural texture would only but help the facade. after all, architectural renderings always include social gatherings and everyday happenings, not dry and boring buildings that look empty.

there's other car rental companies that will do hourly rental rates, but also, ikea does deliver. my friend just bought an entire living room and it was all delivered by ikea for 50 bucks.

Good Questions: What are Some Inexpensive Shops for Outdoor Furniture?

we used a mineral oil as stated in the manufacturer's instructions, which we followed in great detail. I even had to translate and explain to the cleaners in great detail. the water swells happened when the water droplets went unnoticed that evening and left overnight. standing water on cork is a big no no and we knew that, but didn't expect small droplets to cause so much harm overnight. the swells aren't that noticeable to most people since there's no direct lights shinning on the floor, but to architects, these imperfections are heartbreaking. i think it's a great product if you're willing to maintain it diligently, which may just be a great way to force yourself to keep the floor clean at all times.

Why It's Green: A Molecular Mystery
6/19/07 6:32 PM

one office i worked at installed cork flooring throughout some medium traffic spaces including a kitchenette. i must say the aroma for the first 6 months was delicious as it smells smoky and woody, but the smell eventually dissipated. the flooring came with explicit instructions. the floor was never to be cleaned with a wet mop. we thenfigured out why, when a day after a small in-office happy hour we found small round swellings in the cork floor. these were from small droplets of condensation from the cold beer. they never went away.
another problem we found was when we used a small ladder to change a lamp on a high lighting fixture. the entire operation took 3 minutes at most, yet the half inch diameter base of the ladder indented the floor, and as you can guess, it never returned to it's original shape.
in conclusion, the floor looked great, but was way to delicate to be considered desirable as we had a wonderful finish for less than a month. i can't imagine many spaces that beat up the floor much less than we do, so unless it was installed wrongly, i apologize to all the clients i specified this flooring for. besides we still don't know if cork trees can really qualify as a renewable resource since it may or may not really be able to fully grow within those ten years.

someone please regain my interest in this product.

we bought the one from ikea. it was the most expensive one, but we found it at the sale room. it had been bought and returned unopened. we got it for half price at 300 bucks. so far, we've slept like puppies.
