If you're on a budget and want some quick inexpensive punch - I'd get a couple of rolls of interesting wallpaper and hang them on dowels (similar to the wallhanging in the photo) but longer - play with different patterns and colors or same pattern in different colorways. Wallpaper is 27" wide typically, so you could create 4 or 5 vertical elements. You could also try fabric banners.. Ikea usually carries boldly patterned fabrics. Good luck!

We're locals.. and the place (a former Holiday Inn) was swathed in an awful desert olive green before this iteration. It's certainly bright and colorful.. and you can't miss it. Stopped in to check out Tinto - the tapas restaurant - nice LITTLE menu.. but rather pricey. Did not like the lobby at all - very cheap renovation, bad lighting and very disorienting, look at image 4 - all the partition walls are slanted. I'm sure it's fine for a few days stay..

Not to be a 'debbie downer' here.. It's sweet, but personally I have issues of starting to enculturate children to expected gender roles. Could it be a little more industrial looking, perhaps she can be a chef with a white smock and toque as opposed to a playing the happy mommy in the kitchen? Good thing it wasn't all pink..

My partner and I lived in 375 sq. ft. studio in Brooklyn for 2 years - yes, a real bed - queen. Definitely figure a way to partition the space into sleeping and living room area. We had a sleeper sofa (also queen) which worked for guests on occasion - we had floor to ceiling curtains on either side of two matching bookcases which were the 'back of the bed'.. facing the living room. It gave a sense of privacy when guests came over or stayed for the weekend. I lived in another studio with a sleeper sofa, I came home everyday to an unmade sofabed - I hated it. Good luck!

I haven't tried this but just an idea - measure the width of each vertical 'panel' section of the blind, buy some fabric curtain or sheers with color, using self stick velcro tabs, attach/hang each panel to the backside of the blind, put the blind back up. You can pull the blind all the way up and see the fabric or down/open you'll get some color and still be able to use the blinds. good luck.

Before I sign the lease I usually take about 10-15 minutes alone and sit in the apartment to listen and get a feel what the space is like and if I can live there. My gut instincts are usually ok. When I pick up the keys, I bring a vase and a big bouquet of flowers. Moving day I arrive to a colorful 'welcome home' arrangement in an otherwise empty apartment.

Challenging little place - give the place a fresh coat of paint - I'd put couch on far wall facing into the room at a slight angle toward window (gives you a little room for a skinny bookshelf/floor lamp, etc.) behind the couch. Add a mirror on the kitchen entrance wall (just to balance the window so it doesn't feel hemmed in). Get a folding screen (rice paper/carved wood) and put it between the two windows - lined up with the space between the air conditioner and double sash window. Put the TV behind the screen facing the couch at an angle - angle/zig-zag screen as needed to create a free standing partition. Place dining table along with double window to enjoy the view of the patio.. it'll make the place feel bigger when you have a 'view'. If you have company - pull the table away from the window. Think zen inspired cottage with garden view. Good luck.

I do something like - take the upper cabinet doors off, get some foam core cut to the size of the back of each cabinet and 'upholster' with fabric (black & white gingham for ex.) attach using tape/velcro, etc. change the pulls to something silver/nickel, don't fight the black appliances add a touch of color on the backslash (or adhesive silver tile) temporarily and take the bottom doors off and make 'country style' curtain panels on rods to match the same on the window. I think will look charming and lived in.

Neat trick I learned on some website - using a paint stirrer picked up at the paint store for free - nail a nail toward the bottom - hold the stirrer hanging the artwork up against the wall where you want it, remove art, hold nail in place to mark a hole... hammer new nail in - next..

A friend was is a similar situation - he took off the blinds at the ends about the width of a curtain panel and put up a tab curtain panel - the trick was finding curtains with buttons so you didn't need to mess with the vertical blind track.. you could probably do the same by cutting the tabs on top and re-attaching with velcro or snaps.. pop them off when you're ready to move.

I've recently rediscovered a very enjoyable low-tech activity while staying at a hotel with expensive rates for daily internet service... reading the paper! *and* delivered for free every morning. Strangely, I felt better and more roundly informed as opposed to reading my everyday blogs & websites. I swore I'd subscribe to the paper at least on the weekends - still haven't done it. When was the last time you sat and read the paper?

Lighting Designer here - Check out www.schoolhouseelectric.com, they have a great selection of retro-reproduction style shades. Looks like the light bulbs sit in a deeper socket, is there a little screw in there? If so, then there were glass shades of some sort. Measure the diameter - this will be the 'fitter' size and purchase accordingly. Just make sure you have clearance from center of socket to back of wall. Alternatively, go to a lighting store and ask for 40 watt T10 bulbs, frosted... and install a cheap dimmer switch. That will give you good control/options. Good luck!

How about moving the TV? You can go buy some white co-axial cable and cable joiners. Not expensive - then you can think about the space more cohesively - as opposed to the TV being the central focus.

Inexpensive collections are fun, but they need a theme that ties into your aesthetic. Drink wine - collect corks, labels (we collect glasses from wineries we visit). Like to travel - collect postcards, matchbooks, etc. Entertain - collect vintage pressed glass serving dishes, mismatched silverware and glasses. I started a T-shirt covered throw pillow collection - favorite t-shirts that you want to keep and don't wear anymore - make covers and throw them all together on the couch or bed - by theme.. travel, rock-concerts, etc. <g>
