I'd rather have extra storage space than worry about ancient Chinese superstitions, personally.

Poor Stephanie must have a very unfortunate relationship with her parents. I have loads of furniture from my mum and dad, my grandmother, my aunt, even my mum's best friend. And I'm in my late 30s. People are often very generous with things they're not using any more, and happy that they will be used.

Taureg, this may be a design site but it's a design site where a lot of readers care about how and where things are made, and the working conditions etc of people they employ. Worker exploitation and health insurance eight be political issues, but they're also ETHICAL issues about how we treat the people who do the jobs we don't want to do in our homes or who make the things we want in our homes. So these are ethical issues deeply tied into the world of design, and no we won't "give it a rest".

Why don't you just relax about it and let your kids do what they want? It's not like you can't paint over it again in a few years if they're sick of it. My parents let me paint murals all over my bedroom as a kid. When I moved out, they repainted my room.

Am loving the fact that all the art snobs missed the fact that no. 1 is actual art SO HARD. I also hate the artificial distinction between "art" and "craft". Seems to me "art", which is "important" and "special" is anything traditionally done by men (e.g. Oil paintings) and "craft" is anything traditionally done by women (e.g. Anything involving textiles). It's just another way of denigrating traditional women's skills.

I had only two burners in a previous tiny apartment - it was a pain in the butt! I couldn't fry a steak, steam veggies and make a sauce all at once, or example. Hated it, and frequently find myself using at least three of my four burners at once on my current stove. So yes, people who actually cook really do need four burners at least.

Seriously, as long as they didn't kill the horses to make the stuffed heads, who cares? Why is it any worse than a deer head on the wall?? Or the rabbit fur tea cosy AT has been telling me about for days? (which is probably worse as the bunny probably died just to make the tea cosy). It used to be quite the thing to make things out of your fave horse when they died - ink wells out of hoofs etc.

Really cute, although in the climate I live in, I wouldn't want a paved courtyard (in fact we took the paving out of ours because it heated up too much in summer!) but in a cooler climate I'd love something like this.

We live in a bock of two story apartments that have courtyards front and back. The neighbors at the back smoke, with their back window open. Smoke comes straight into our apartment. Can't have the windows shut the whole time, as Melbourne in summer is very hot, we don't have aircon and we need to cool the house down at night, it's affecting my breating to the point where I'm on oral steroids as well as a preventative inhaler, yet they won't stop despite knowing it bothers us. No-one has a "right" to pollute the air I breathe to the point where I need serious medication.

Also from Melbourne, so I hear you. We have a two story apartment, and the top floor, where the bedrooms are, gets really hot. Portable aircon is really inefficient and costs LOTS to run - I wouldn't do it. We have an evaporative cooler in the bedroom, which we add ice to, and fans in the other rooms. The suggestion of setting up the fans so you get a cross breeze at night is a really good one. Blackout curtains do make a big difference, and so do outside blinds or shade cloth - our outside blinds make a massive difference. Filling a spray bottle with cool water and squirting ourselves (and our dogs) cools us down. If you have exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom put them on at night to suck the hot air out of the place and suck cool air in the windows. And seriously, get an evaporative cooler - lying in bed at night with ours blowing moist air onto us, we couldn't even tell how hot it was.

For all those who asked, Melbourne is very dry heat! (and thank goodness, it's looking a lot more autumnal today!)

I think it looks terrific - I can't believe anyone would complain about dated, ugly wood panelling or brick being anted over. The after is SO much nicer - and I bet once the owners have some cosy furniture in there it'll look even better
