No-one "needs" that much space. In other countries multiples families would believing in a building that big. They might have done more than most to make their giant house energy efficient but living like that is not green.

Well I like it. I especially like the black stove, it really adds something interesting to the room, and the after is heaps nicer than the before, despite the mean comments from people. Yes it's heaps bigger than my kitchen, but that's not really a factor in whether it looks nice, is it?!

Best thing to do with menus is put them in one of those books with plastic pockets, that way you can see them, don't have to dig through a drawer, and they're neatly contained.

Couple of great ideas here - bit sexist of some of the comments to assume just because you're a mother you wouldn't be interested in technology!

No neighbours who smoke - the smoke from our neighbour's apartment comes straight in through the windows at the back of our apartment, plus seems to leak into the second bedroom closests - gross.

Apparently, if you can smell it, it's damaging your health. Not happy.

+1 to painting the armoire - but I think with a big piece like that I'd go for white, rather than a dark colour. It'd balance the sofa better too.

Love the house, love the orange stripes in the kitchen, and love the kitty!

Rosiegreenie, she actually said 200 years - "americans have never been in a war (for over 200 yrs) and have not experienced shortage of anything, food, energy etc in the last 100"

She's obviously also forgotten about the Great Depression, when plenty of Americans experienced plenty of shortages of food, energy and other things - like clothing and housing - well inside the last 100 years. Not to mention the Dust Bowl - also within the last 100 years - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_Bowl.

I love chairs in bathrooms, because I like to sit down while I brush my teeth - I guess I'm lazy! Not having enough room for one, we have an IKEA hamper that you can sit on, so it's multi-functional.

I like the after - wood's not sacred, and you can always strip it again.

I've got to the point where I just roll my eyes at all the "I liked it better before" comments.

Not everything old is fabulous, peeps, they made stuff that was total junk in the middle of last century just like they do now. That lamp was no design classic and it looks awesome in yellow.

The Hills Hoist, and a lot of homes having awnings are definitely NOT British! And the author acknowledged that a lot of the rest was influenced by being oart of the Commonwealth.

And rosiegreenie, the Americans have in fact had several wars in America - the War of Independence, the Civil War, you may recall the attack on Pearl Harbour was an attack on US soil, which brought the US into WWII, plus the Battle of the Aleutian Islands, also part of WWII, plus if you go back earlier, there was Queen Anne's War, King Philip's War and the French and Indian War.

Pugs always look perturbed, whether they're wearing silly hats or not - it's their natural expression :-)

They're crocheted, looks like they've cut old t-shirt into pretty even strips and crocheted two rows of trebles. Simple, would take about five minutes with an over-sized crochet hook.

@mariyaodessa, even if you have a 25 room house and a ceiling fan on in every room, which would be a pretty silly thing to do as they don't cool unless you're actually in the room, because they cool you not the air, you're still probably using less than one air conditioner.

@Doctrine, (a) that article says the cause of the deaths is not known, and (b) people die in extreme heat because they do not know how to stay cool and safe, not because they need airconditioners. They die because they don't do the simple things like putting their feet in a bucket of cold water, taking a cool shower, and staying hydrated, that we can all do to keep ourselves cool without aircon.

It's exactly like how people claim they "need" SUVs to cart the kids around the city. It's nonsense.

Yes, I second PNWGal on the mirrors, works well, plus I don't think you need any cleaning fluid, not even vinegar - just water works really well.
