I need to do this because I have elevated blood lead levels from working with lead. They recommend drinking a to of water and always having food in your system, or otherwise your body will absorb the lead you ingest. If you eat, the lead will not absorb as easily. It.s hard because I have to stop everything I am doing and wash my face and hands and leave the room to eat. Better than being poisoned!

ATK tested cleaning sponges in the dishwasher and said that they don't kill all the bacteria, that really the best way to get rid of it is by microwaving it. I guess the dishwasher is the best option if you don't have a microwave- which may be the case since it seems people are so anti-microwave these days for some reason I will never truly understand.

Also I saw a comment that says refrigerator drawers and such- it says on my drawers to specifically wash by hand. I suppose I am not wild enough to disregard that, but I guess they say that for a reason?

We have to peel the skins off green things like cucumbers and green apples since they contain a lot of vitamin K, which my husband needs to avoid because of blood-thinning medication.

I took a class at whole foods on making your own nut and oat milks. So great! I totally forgot about it though and was just thinking how I don't have any milk for breakfast. Crisis averted!

My husband and I are not eating out at all this month to save money unless we use gift money. This would be easy if we didn't live in Brooklyn and every other storefront is an amazing little place with amazing food. Perhaps once per month would be more sustainable so we don't binge in February. I say just plan ahead and it will be easier. Make big pots of food and eat it for days. I am starting to use a crockpot so it isn't as much work. And if your husband cooks, excellent! He can help, and if your son can help too, Yahtzee! He'll learn and it will be more valuable time and money spent together than at a restaurant.

Might I also suggest, if you want to pretend you are going out, it could be a fun night. Set the table a little fancy, dress up a little, and splurge a bit on ingredients for a nicer home-cooked meal, make dessert. Even try to find a copy-cat recipe for your favorite restaurant. Getting a nicer cut of meat and some cheese and a decent bottle of wine is still loads cheaper than going to a restaurant where they pay overhead and you have to tip.

I actually would use this as our primary fridge, since we'll be moving into a one-car garage as our little cottage house! It's so tiny!

Got the Simple Human one from the Classics section from Macy's (actually got it from BB&B) and it is a PAIN to clean. Has impossible nooks and crannies you can't take apart and they build up scuz. I have to scrub it with a toothbrush and douse those areas with bleach. So gross. Do NOT get that one.

Just listened to the Planet Money podcast about lard today. Very interesting about how lard came to be demonized by P&G in favor of Crisco.

I have used all butter and it's good. I have used all lard, good. All Crisco, also good. I am thinking that 1/2 butter 1/2 lard would be great to try.

Well a few years ago I bought my husband "How to Boil Water" which I thought was excellent and very basic. I don't think he's ever opened it. I guess he just doesn't have the desire, and I have zero teaching patience, so it's a never-ending battle to keep the food responsibilities somewhat balanced. If you think her husband has the desire, this one is a goodie.

I like the "My Room" posts. I don't have kids yet, but want them so posts like this appeal to me too, not just people who *already* have children. And if you don't like the posts don't click on them, scroll on. Problem solved.

This room is adorable. The turquoise and orange compliment well.

Great "upcycle" shall we call it then? Since people have to be all crazy and technical. Geez! Excellent job, I would have never thought of something like this for a solution.

Aren't the pumpkins used for jackolanterns different from the ones you cook with? I thought they were, which is why I would hesitate to use them in the "myriad of ways". Anyone know?

My husband is also on anti-vK meds, but sadly those are some of the healthiest foods to eat. He was also told not to avoid them all together, because they pack in so many other nutrients. We keep him consistent and he gets his INR levels checked very regularly. He takes a slightly higher dosage in exchange for having some of these things, but tries to have a small salad with one meal every day, and on some days I'll saute one of those leafy greens in something, or put spinach into smoothies.

Things you also need to watch for are the skins of green veggies and fruits..apples, zucchini, cukes, things like that, just peel them first. Green beans are low on the list. Things like choi, eat mostly the stalks, etc.. tofu I never realized was on the list, and blueberries...that's curious to me. We had a list on the fridge forever, but I don't know where it went.

Just be consistent, but again, consult your doctor, and more than one, and root veggies, cauli and light green veggies are a good alternative.

We have never had a problem renting our space. Never. We are careful and get copies of passports and id's and as long as everything is in working order as we left it upon return, we destroy the copies. We give our valuables to our neighbors while we are away.

I didn't see anyone post this, but I also use the water leftover from making pasta or boiling potatoes and then add the veggies or scraps to simmer. Makes a great stock and is less water-wasteful than dumping a huge pot of flavorful water down the drain. I just mark the containers "Not gluten-free" when I freeze them if I use pasta water in case I forget and dump it in something I will cook for my gf friends.

Just the experience of it all.. We ate our way through Italy, and took a private cooking class from our BnB hostess in Tuscany. We have great memories of wine and food, cooking and eating, and eating some more. I did get a nice nice bottle of olive oil for my mom. She's afraid to use it!
