I second every one else, paint out those stripes, have your art simarlarly laid out to the first time but hung lower down, and put the stripy rug back, declutter a little, but not too much.

Apartment Therapy - What Not To Do: Diana's Living Room #2

I think it all depends on the rest of your furniture...

These shades can go with anything and everything, you can do the obvious and go 50's atomic space age styles, which i would do in a metallic bullet shaped goose-neck for the sconces and standard lamps

Or you can riff on the asian flavour, contrast with opulent asian reds

Or you can riff on the creamy organic flavour and place with pleasing woods

Or you can riff on the design classics theme and team with classics from a different age...

I don't really like the Johnthan Adler style other people have mentioned, far too matchy, matchy in my opinion

i'm with Doppelganger, I think they look awesome as they are.
Especially in the bedroom, they remind of modernist architecture when they put in slashed windows in unexpected places. I think its silly to try and dress them any more than you have

If you have a top floor warehouse space, and you've lived without them for 8 years i don't think you even need curtains. Maybe if you feel inspired by a beautiful piece of fabric you could make some long panels for the living room, but I think your room looks finished as it is.

Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: How To Treat My Small Windows?

That first room does look very dated, and the third room is grandiose in the extreme, but the middle room is delightful. The proportions and colours are beautiful, and it looks really livable. It is the total antithesis to my own style, but that doesn't matter I can respect and admire beautiful and well-considered interiors no matter their particular aesthetic.

I love, love, love, the Warhol kitchen!!
I don't think you'd necessarily even have to laminate it like fong does, if you need to be able reverse it. You could even just tack them on, because of the wooden lip this wouldn't look tacky.
Also, that fridge is too white, an older fridge would actually look better!

Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: How Can I Make These Cabinets Look Nicer?

Sarah -The wicker chairs are from a middling crate and barrel-ish type store here in NZ, but i imagine they are of chinese manufacture so someone should be doing them over there.

Thanks greer and peggy for the comments and suggestions, we rearranged and rearranged in every conceivable combination! and this was the best fit. The photo makes the red couch look more isolated than it is. I can't make space for a walk-through because it is a square room with lots packed in...
I think what i'll do is put a simple desk / console table where yellow cartell is now, put my computer there and get a tv card for it, maybe it can be on wheels so i can roll it in front of the fireplace when in viewing use.
Art above couch is a poster of work call "Blitz" by a local NZ artist Yuk King Tan, it looks like complex snowflakes until you look really, really close and you see it is made up of tiny media images.

Woah, calm down peoples!!

I thought SeanG put it very well and nicely and respectfully. And I have to admit it was rather close to the bone. It makes me wonder what our interiors really reveal about us and our psychology?

Hi Iag, I could pull the couch in, but then i'd be nose to nose and knee to knee with the people in the swivel chairs!!!

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. The fire place shelf is concrete, and so is the fireplace, and all the walls, so no i can't remove it, and it is kind of lovely anyway, an original feature, even though its faux.
Yeah I was going to get a tv tuner for the mac,but then I discovered that the dvd player in it is the most annoyingly unhackable region coded thing you can get, so I have to have a separate dvd player anyway for rentals. It has been good though when we do watch films on it, we swivel the wicker seats round and put our feet up!!
My wicker seats are mid-range quality, and the kids do like to tear strips off them, so I don't know how long they''ll last, but i just love them, a blend of modern and organic, and they are comfortable.

Actually Sparklehorse is an indie guitar band.
And nope, I didn't mean insane in a positive way.
And it is not remotely homophobic to detest such a gross liberace-like aesthetic, so don't you dare try and say it is Patrick.

Safety pin this $32 dollar bed spread to the cushions and paint the wood bright orange.

find a random box to hold your tv and reclaim your coffee table. Spray paint coffee table and put stencils on it, either urban graffiti or something prettier, this kind of look is similar

Nothing can save that futon, although the other stuff is just as fugly, you just can't funk this kind of cheap up , so throw a massive cover over all of it (including arms), and most importantly totally smother it with heaps of mix n match cushions that you make yourself, buy at thrift shops and at target.

Wow it is really fugly, I was going to say the fairy lights thing too, but I think you'd need heaps to cover the nasty cheapness of that gilt.

I absolutely love/hate the mustard ottoman, who would've thought it would work so well with the sleek orange/red sofa and the grey wall.

I love pieces like that, when you first see them you go "urgh", but you are somehow drawn to them.

I always found Ty annoying, but kinda sweet too.
However I have detested Extreme Makeover ever since they started completely bowling houses down and putting up grotesque McMansions, the average size of houses in the states is obscene. And most of the interior design was that horrendous middle-class, over-the-top suburban american yuck.

Having said that I really like the stuff in this shop, especially those little mug and saucer sets (although surprisingly chi-chi for Ty)
