I echo everything "Asticat" and "Miami's Elaine" said...

I never stop liking certain color palettes, but I outgrow my ardent obsession for them. My color phases correspond to life phases, as well...and I do mark these as milestones in my head.

Podcasts from the BBC and The Guardian are excellent...if you've got a more Anglophilic sensibility when it comes to language (particularly syntax & diction) and sense of humor, they're excellent!

Unless someone absolutely LOVES open shelving no matter what, a mix of both open and closed storage is probably ideal.

One good way to gauge which items "want" to be stored outside are the ones used SO frequently that you feel yourself becoming irritated at the tedium of having to open a cabinet door each time you have to retrieve them.

Allow functionality to be your guide.. :)

All of the items in the home are beautiful...*GREAT* eye, wonderful taste!

Somehow, the house feels....cold. All of the elements are there to create a warm and cozy home, but it feels like there's something missing in the energy...and it looks to me that everything was arranged "too" precisely, such as when butlers used to measure the exact distance between objects in a place setting (as depicted in "Remains of the Day").

[I don't typically make "unconstructive" comments like this, but maybe I'm not the only one who feels this way? Regardless, yes...beautiful home, and there's a lot of deserved love from AT readers. :)]

Beautiful and functional, and I assume your particular guest appreciates hand-crafted things? I think that adding beautiful, special touches to pragmatic creations is something that the Japanese do by custom, and it's really lovely when people choose to make the ordinary, extraordinary! <3

In response to SFview's comment, "You have got way more time on your hands than most people I know," my one-word response: PRIORITIES.

Tips For Throwing a House Warming Party In a Small Space

It was only a few weeks ago that I realized one of the upsides to interminably rainy days (I live in LA, where it never rains): NO DUST!

Apart from the areas of the kitchen that are affected by grease splatters, I reckon that in climates where the air is dense w/ moisture, dust accumulation's not much of an issue (relatively speaking...).

In reference to the "blank canvas" look w/ all of the white, could it perhaps be a preference for some creative people who prefer not to have to change their own space immediately after they tire of the look?

Since designers have the opportunity to work w/ different looks at work, they might have ample outlets for variety there...so maybe the all-whiteness (or all-black for some creative types) isn't about being "boring" (because they're clearly not AFRAID of change) but rather a way to (1) be timeless and (2) keep their space uncomplicated to allow for new ideas, unobstructed by what's in their view.

OH, THE MYOPIA...

I also agree w/ MsDonnaGirl: "It's interesting that such creative/artsy/interior design junkies can't accept an aesthetic other than their own. "

It seems that some of the (snarky) commenters only see what's before their eyes, and nothing more (i.e., taking things LITERALLY).

What I see are sound design principles that translate to other design styles, should Kristen decide to redecorate or work w/ a client whose aesthetic is something other than her own. I also think (and this is only through inference) that this studio apt does not define or encompass the entirely of Kristen's aesthetic preferences.

Some people are SO quick to make assumptions and reach firm conclusions w/o first asking the questions which would give them necessary insights...it's called IGNORANCE, but such is Nature. :)

OF COURSE Kristen should be proud of herself!! She's organized, resourceful, allows PURPOSE to guide her decision-making (always foolproof), and has everything she needs in a small space...qualities the haters on this page DON'T have...otherwise, they wouldn't question how she manages to live (happily) in a small space.

As one who also relishes small-space living, I completely understand the appeal of not having to WASTE my time and energy on maintaining a home, much of which doesn't get used (i.e., why is it the necessary [for all] to have a HUGE bed taking up a room that remains empty except when you're unconscious? Is it worth it for everyone to work and earn all that extra money for that amt. of space?). Some people need McMansions to fill up their (possibly) empty souls, while others are quite content to comfortably live in a trailer, boat, or studio apt. w/ only the beautiful and functional things that they need. <3

Another credenza below TV to sandwich it (if able to spend $)? Switch shelf and credenza (if mounting holes can be covered)?
