@TheWhitePlates - could the Europeans be employing natural fermentation to make carbonated beverages?
I am reading an amazing book right now - The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Katz - and in it he describes many carbonated beverages from different cultures (forgive pun) such as water kefir, Mabi from the Caribbean, Tepache from Mexico, ginger beer, kvass from the Ukraine, kombucha and lots more. (He does warn that fermenting sweet beverages can be dangerous due to explosion potential but also suggests some safety measures.)

Nice idea. Though I have to say, in this case, I preferred the image that was being covered up.

I disagree, Adora. Why is putting out a bowl of vinegar only for experienced cooks?

And besides, isn't the idea for us home cooks to glean knowledge from more experienced cooks? I think all the tips are helpful.

As for getting rid of your timer - no need to take it in the strict literal sense, but just incorporate the idea that we should learn to trust our senses more in cooking and not rigidly adhere to recipes - something I am still working on.

I think it looks fine as is and was a very good solution.

Perhaps the difference in European and American fridge sizes sheds some light on the obesity problem here in the U.S. (I've often thought of this when walking through the Costco parking lot, watching people load up their cars.)

For those who are avoiding eggs because of health reasons, I would say read up on paleo and low carb eating. There are many who believe (and studies that lend credence to it) that eggs are actually quite heart healthy, and that dietary intake of cholesterol is NOT what contributes to elevated cholesterol levels. Your body makes its own cholesterol, independent of intake. It is often a high carbohydrate diet that leads to poor lipid profiles. We may have been mislead all these years by official guidelines.
(Personally, I eat tons of eggs and have excellent cholesterol numbers.)

Yes, I noticed that too - this seems to be the same place that has recently been advertising on AT.

This looks amazingly delicious! But I'm afraid a little too much work for me. Maybe for a special occasion though.
And I laughed at the fiance comment....my husband, too, would eat Chinese takeout over just about anything.

Very charming and inviting!
But as a fellow Angeleno, it would make me very uneasy to be underneath that loft bed and especially the suspended glass door on the side...in case of an earthquake.

(My daughter had the same Ikea bed, and the center beam gave way on hers too. Though fortunately hers was on the floor.)

Thank you, Peterz and Girlwithacurl, you've convinced me - I guess I will just have to spring for the bay leaves! Though I made a smaller version of this recipe tonight, using a bit of thyme instead of the bay leaves and it was still quite tasty!

Gwac - you gave me an idea - wonder if I can find some bay laurel trees around me? I have heard that they grow around here (Los Angeles/ Santa Monica area). D'uh - I never realized that's where bay leaves come from! Though I'd be a bit worried that they were sprayed, or city girl that I am, that I'd mistake some poisonous leaf for them!

Yes, I thought the same thing Ilovekefir - less thyroid hormone would slow things down. Also, oats are carbs, which elicit an insulin response, so I'm not sure how that would keep insulin levels low.

Is there any substitute for the bay leaves? Or would it be better to just leave them out, if I don't have any? Just came from the store and couldn't bring myself to spend $6 for a tiny package of bay leaves.

Hmmm...I initially missed the "sponsored post" too. I don't like the idea of ads masquerading as content.
And my experiences with Virgin were just ok. The mood lighting really isn't as great as it looks in the pictures, and the seats were just as uncomfortable, if not more so, than other airlines.

I've had similar experiences to Scotty214. The Umbra items I have purchased in the past did not hold up. I would not be inclined to buy their products again, although I like their style overall. But style is not worth much, without function.
