I must say, it`s the ONLY site upgrade, which I don`t hate from the first sight. The new look and feel are still resembling the old layout, which makes me feel comfortable with the changes. Congrats to the Apartment Therapy crew, you did the unthinkable - brought the new version of the site without screwing everything up. Most of the "big places" I visit couldn`t manage to do that. Keep up the good work! Welcome to Apartment Therapy 3.0! |

As for upholstered furniture and bedbugs: if you find something really worth taking home, there is a way to "nuke" the thing; you will need a sheet of foil or a plastic bag big enough to wrap the piece airtight, and some formaldehyde. Put the thing on the foil and wrap it airtight after putting a small bowl of formaldehyde on the foil under the piece. Leave it for 2-3 days outside, then unwrap, remove formaldehyde (if any left) and leave it for another 2-3 days before putting inside. Nothing survives this treatment. Definitely no, especially as the only means of controlling the appliance. Dials and buttons have one big advantage over the touchscreen - after short practice they don`t need to be looked at while operating them (or checking the settings), plus they are much faster. Plus they don`t consume energy. Plus they less likely have bug-ridden software behind them. In my (biased) opinion, any attempt to make simple things more complicated than they really need to be, is another corporate attempt to drain our pockets. Living without MS Office is pretty easy for me and people I know. We mostly use OpenOffice and find its interface superior to the "new and improved" MSO 2007 and 2010 one. How many people can really tell the difference in functionality between OO and MSO? 1%? Less? And from my experience those who complain about glitches in document formatting are using spaces, tabs and enters as their only formatting tools. No wonder their documents fall apart. It`s not about the media you record your pictures on, it`s about your attitude. I shoot mostly digital, because of the convenience, but never gave up on film, especially since small rangefinder or p&s cameras have no viable counterpart in the world of digicams. I had my "first digicam syndrome", shooting hundreds of pics every day, but got over it quickly and now I come back with about 10-30 frames shot during the day, just as I would if I shot with film. Being "raised" by classic film cameras, I learned to be picky and thoughtful (is this really worth a frame of an expensive slide film?). This attitude works great with a DSLR, plus extra perks like instant preview and ability to shoot a couple dozens of frames without remorse, when a subject is worth it. Bottom line: treat every frame as it costs real money and turn that burst mode off. Stop. Observe. Think. Compose. Decide whether to shoot or walk away. Press the shutter ONCE. Try spraying the fence and other places cats come through to your lawn with some cheap perfume spray, the cheaper and stronger, the better. Repeat after a couple of days. How To Keep Cats From Using the Lawn As a Litter Box? Good Question |

Looking back, I can say that in my case it`s not how long I hang onto old bits and pieces, but how many of these I still keep. I just got rid of a box full of old 486 and Pentium I and II motherboards (a couple of each "flavor") which I stored "just in case" (I`m a sysadmin and computer technician). I left one of each kind, threw away the rest. Did the same with my twenty keyboards, plan to do it with add-on cards, peripherals and so on. How Long Do You Hang Onto Old Bits & Pieces? |

Not really. I rarely buy my tech stuff brand new, so it already has a (small) dent here or a (small) crack there - it doesn`t bother me as long it doesn`t impair the device`s functionality. Actually, I feel kinda relieved when my perfectly-looking tech trinket gets its first "mark" - it has lost it`s virginity and now can be used as a normal tool, not an object of worship :) Are You a Tech Perfectionist? |

Another "revolutionary" mouse, pleeeeze... I`ve seen dozens of such designs, and the more they were advertised as "super-ergonomic", "curing carpal tunnel", "bringing the world peace" and other buzzwords, the more they sucked in reality, and this one is no exception. Look at the hand - the wrist is in the air! Dang, my forearm hurts just by looking at this. It`s the same as with the so-called "ergonomic keyboards": people still prefer buying a non-working gadget to just learning to use properly these simple things they already own. Underwear, toothbrushes, towels and other stuff that`s close to my body. Everything else - why not, of course if the price is right and the stuff is really useful and repairable by me. I once looked at my (used, but absolutely useful) tools, electronics and appliances and realized that I would declare bankruptcy if I bought all of them brand new. I shoot both DSLR and a film point-and-shoot, and they complement each other very well. In my opinion it`s not about the equipment, but in one`s ability to maintain balance between making memories and capturing them, between watching and taking pictures. I usually go out with an empty 4 gig card in my "Kropfaktor" and a fresh roll of film in my Agfa Sensor or Petri Color 35, and usually come home with about 30-40 pics combined (tops) and a head full of beautiful sights and other interesting experiences. A couple years ago I saw something that could probably do a good job imitating concrete: painted LDF panels. I thought it was some kind of rough-structured stone until I touched it. LDF is lighter than concrete panels, and could add a bit of thermal and accoustic insulation to your walls. OTOH, painting it yourself to produce good results may be difficult. Boycott is a hard action and difficult to maintain in the long run. Going worldwide with it is basically impossible, considering how lazy and inconsistent most people are (especially when it comes to extremes). Boycott requires clear goals, one enemy to be pointed at, very strong will and constant renewal of the anger that drives it. It`s not impossible, but still extremely hard.
