I would get beautiful sheets of ¾" plywood (walnut!!!) and cut and edge them slightly larger than the trim molding all around and "float" them slightly away from the wall using cleats. Once the panels are in place the world is your oyster -- hang shelves or art on the panels. Or nothing! Good luck.

I bought a small mahogany table at auction for $400 only to have my partner tell me he really disliked it. The table turned out to be by Robjohns Gibbing and I sold it for $8,000. I was happy and my partner was very pleased!

I purchased a 18th C. portrait at a Christies auction in London 10 years ago. I paid $3000. I was in New York City the day of the auction and because of the time difference they called me so early in the morning that I was phone bidding for the piece while still naked in bed!!!

My son is 12 almost 13. He doesn't have a computer in his room. Never has and hopefully never will. He used to get to have his iPhone in his room to "listen to music" but then I got him a bluetooth speaker so now even the iPhone isn't taken into his room. And before anyone says something about a 12 year old having an iPhone, we live in New York City and my son walks 8 blocks to school so a phone is a must so he can text me when he arrives safely.

trchi: I have to disagree with your comment. My son was 2 when he crawled behind the couch and burned his wrist on a radiator. He's 12 now and every time I see his scar I beat myself up about not doing more to protect him. Keep them safe if you can.

My SubZero has stains between the glass shelves and the plastic that encases them. I can see the stain but can't get to it to clean it. Any suggestions?

I DIY mostly because I can't get what I want at a price I want to pay. Yes, I'm cheap! I grew up with a Mom who did all kinds of DIY so it seems natural to me. It's the kind of self-reliance I want my child to have. DIY I have done includes drywall, electrical and roofing along with sewing drapes, and canning vegetables. I designed and built a Greek Revival play house for my son. Latest DIY: upholstering a chair. DIY dream: to build 10 6-over-6 double hung windows using a multiple bit router set.

to akay: you can learn anything from videos on youtube, including how to cobble!! I watched two of the cobbling videos yesterday and gave it some serious consideration.

I have to say no to this. It looks so fake. And crafty. Why not just use logs? How hard are they to maintain in a "non-functioning" fireplace?

If you think the chair has a value above $2.99 (and it must, right!) and you want to flip it for a profit then don't do anything to and sell it "as is" to a dealer now. Don't even change out the fabric. But if you want to keep the piece then you should feel free to do what you like to it. Yes, it's a known piece but don't keep it as is if it doesn't fit your decor.

Getting a DS for my son (8) is without a doubt the biggest mistake in my parenting career. Nothing, but nothing, has caused more problems. If I could I would trash the thing. Don't do it.
