dishwashers can also start fires. i read an article recently about deaths from an electrical fire caused by running the dishwasher overnight, while the homeowners slept. if the homeowners would have been awake, they presumably would have noticed the smoke before it was too late.

i think this is the same flatware. it looks more like the picture above in person than the picture they show on the bed bath and beyond website.

(preface: i design for a custom cabinetry shop...)

option 1: if you want the look of frameless cabinets, most likely you're talking about a full-overlay door look. Blum makes hinges that achieve maximum overlay for face-frame cabinets. (Blum Compact 39C, and so on.) obviously increasing the overlay means you'll need larger cabinet doors.

I also wouldn't recommend losing the center support on the face frame cabinets, because they may be needed for support. however, you could easily cover them with your doors as well, leaving approximately 1/8" space between doors at center.

this option takes a certain amount of skill if you plan to calculate door sizes, fabricate doors, and bore/drill for hinges, etc.

option #2: the other option would be if you want to keep your existing doors. you could still change the hinges to concealed hinges (Blum or otherwise) and just paint/stain the doors and face frames. you could cut out the raised center panels of the doors and replace it with a 1/4" thick plywood flat panel (stained/painted to match) for a shaker-style look that would lend itself well to a more modern/contemporary look with the right finishes and hardware.

hope this helps, and best of luck to you!

i completely agree with bepsf. it should've been a custom integrated piece, with a small toe kick, using matching ikea doors. touch-latch hardware could've been used so that no decorative pulls/knobs would be needed and you'd still have the function of easily opening the doors. (or the doors could be modified to have fingerpull edges, but that would've changed the edge profiles for just those doors.)

wood CAN be powdercoated, however it isn't done by traditional automotive powdercoaters. it's a different process as the a finisher has to adjust the process, taking into account the properties of the wood. it's a speciality industry-find someone that has done it before because you don't want someone experimenting with your piece! when done properly, it is a lot more durable than typical spray finishes. it's definitely not necessary for this project in my opinion; i'd consider it for commercial applications.

just came across this version that is Very similar to the original table, and even has a tempered glass top (whereas it looks like the original was just plexiglas.)

and it's only $99!

it looks like they hired a decorator devoid of any taste. i agree with another poster that said they're surprised at the lack of quality in the furnishings. looks very "new money".

be careful with some of those suggestions! a couple are over 36" in diameter which is Not a side table!

the style of this one is a little different, but it has the chrome base and glass top, and is quite affordable:

I can understand the point he makes about the bamboo, but i would not recommend cork for a kitchen application. cork swells when exposed to water and humid conditions. even when sealed to manufacturers specifications i've seen problems with it time and again. (in various room types.) a kitchen the last place i'd use it.

I've always heard that spices lose their flavor when exposed to light over time; however, this is a beautiful option for spices that are frequently used that you might want at arms length. That's just something anyone interested in this project should keep in mind.

I've stayed at the James Hotel, and would highly recommend it. I can't think of one thing i would change about it.
