I've found that craft foam really works well. You can use a hole punch to make the holes and you can purchase pre-cut shapes (like hearts) and just punch holes around the edge. I just ordered a second ring to go with our first -- I'm planning to use the two of them together as an advent calendar with the shapes. I also ordered "photo/card holders" and found some pegs shaped like boys & girls. I'm hoping to paint the pegs to look like the three kids by this December.
