baker_d you said it so well! We had a rotisserie chicken tonight and some salad and it was so refreshing after a couple nights of restaurant meals.

PurledUp, yes, there are many photos of the apartment on the rental site as well.

Well, we didn't burn the lathe (or give it away for fires) because it was full of nails and we weren't sure how safe it would be...

It goes in with the lime juice and mint leaves, actually; you muddle it so the rum really has the flavor of the mint.

Mike you described it exactly! "Exciting and easy" that's just how it looks in the beginning. And then sheer tedium sets in, and the feeling that you will never, never, ever be truly done.

Parnassus - ha! No, our contractor was completely awesome and dependable. Lucky us!

And I don't know that we were brave to do the demo work - more like underinformed and cheap. ;)

@WannaBeBeachBum yes I think there are several other options: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-reviews/top-kitchen-housewares-2013-bella-ceramic-teakettle#slide-9

On the filling, it was pretty basic! I sautéed some finely diced potatoes, then added a few eggs and cooked them until softly scrambled. We added cilantro and avocado too.

Oh, I should have made it explicit, but the unspoken assumption in this post is that of course the dishwasher is already full! :) I wanted a second dishwasher sooo bad. It seems like such an indulgence, but it would always be busy in our kitchen!

@Roseann any kind of cream will work, as long as you can whip it to firm peaks. I generally use heavy cream, but have also used whipping cream and light cream. Enjoy!

@faisane that quantity of graham crackers is about 20 ounces, or 560 grams. But I think that the weight isn't as helpful -- what you're really looking for is an equivalent surface area, since you're building full layers out of the crackers or cookies.

As far as graham cracker substitutes go, digestive biscuits are great, as is any other slightly sweet, nutty or whole grain cookie or cracker, as long as it is very crisp and dry. (I've been meaning to make up a no-bake dessert with McVitie's!)

@Island Girl so, either one will work just fine. Heavy cream, whipping cream, and, usually, light cream, are interchangeable for whipped cream desserts like these. The only reason I look for "heavy" cream as opposed to "whipping" cream is that whipping cream usually has more additives and stabilizers.

@carolyn_suzanne, sure! You could totally do this with homemade graham crackers, if you want to take the extra time. I am sure it would be delicious! I could also see doing individual servings with homemade graham crackers, to show them off a little more. Cupcakes, if you will. Just layer as directed above, but in little stacks, using round homemade graham crackers.

@waii, yes, we used a mix of regular base cabinets and the shallow 12-inch deep cabinets which can be mounted on the floor or the wall. So the island is about 36 inches wide.

The beverage containers are these ones, from World Market. They were great.

And yes, there was a light lemon dressing on the slaw in the salad cups. I'll run them as a recipe soon - I just want to retest them first.

Thanks so much everyone!

@mschatelaine thank you for the kind words! On the island, we may come to regret the lack of bar seating when we have kids, but we opted not to include it here for a few reasons that have born out so far. Number one, the table looks far away due to the lens I used but it's actually quite close; I don't think we really had enough clearance, and it feels intimate still to have people hanging out and sitting at the table and talking to the cook.

Also, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, the extra supports and stools would mess, I think, with the really lean, clean look I was going for on the island. And last but not least, the extra cost of the marble and barstools weren't really in the budget.

Like I said above, I would like to put in a wet bar eventually on the other side of the kitchen and include a stool or two there, if we can squeeze them in. And now I have to go track down those stools -- I know which ones you mean and they are amazing!

@popop wow!! I love all your notes! Thank you so much for sharing so much of your kitchen - I'd love to see photos when your new one is done!

A couple things: If we had had a little more space and money I would have also done a side-by-side fridge/freezer. I think I looked at those Whirlpools! But I would have lost a lot of pantry space and we just didn't have the spare $$.

And on the faucet, I don't love mine either! It's a Hansgrohe, pretty reasonably priced ($200) without a pull-down. My husband does most of the dishes and he doesn't really like the pull-downs. But I just don't like the faucet; it is too high and shallow in its arch, and splatters a ton. I feel like I haven't read good guidance on matching faucets to sinks, so I'd love any insight you have on your next faucet. It's the most used thing in the kitchen, right? So important...
