I don't comment often on house tours, but that was a slam dunk! Although the living room was a little spartan I loved everything else, I think no upper cabinets is fantastic if you have the drawer space to accommodate it. Loved EVERYTHING about the kids rooms, to die for! Also that master bath shower combo was fantastic! The nook placement, kitchen configuration was also quite clever!

Wow. this is such an incredibly powerful topic. I think friendship in our increasingly mobile and digital world is harder and harder to come by. As someone who had to reinvent her friend circle after almost all of her close friends moved away (sigh the end of graduate school) my husband and I made a project out of meeting cool people through other people we knew and trying to form a new 'group' luckily it worked out really well for us and we found a group of 10 like minded people that are truly our 'soul friends.'

Here are some tips,
1. It's true you can't judge a book by it's cover, but sometimes a cover can be a good lure...I always go up to people at parties and chat them up if they are dressed in an interesting way...plus it's a good conversation starter (I love your scarf, necklace, etc)
2. Make friends with that person you see everywhere, even if you don't have a lot in common, chances are she will know a ton of people, one of whom you might click with.
3. Give the shy ones a chance, it might be painful trying to draw out conversation from a new shy acquintance but it might be worth it.
4. Talk to the person next to you at church, mosque, weight watchers whatever you do.
5. reach out to your facebook circle, as in 'hey remember me? i moved let's get coffee'
6. and the absolutely most important thing....always always accept a first invitation...I try to be person who always invites new people over or to dinner so that they can meet some of my friends, people who say no two times in a row rarely get asked a third time.

thanks!

I rep houston non stop to the utter disgust of my friends and family but what can I say...it's the best!

As a Rice grad I'm always amazed that people overlook the campus as a truly incredible place for a stroll and a cup of coffee at their absolutely gorgeous campus cafe

Also for shopping the Rice Village as an incredible assortment of independent boutiques and chain stores in an eclectic (if expensive) mix.

One of my favorite stores for home decor and design is the imposing and stunning High Fashion Home, it's an absolute must see (and shop) it's also located next door to some fabulous vietnamese cafes in midtown.

Close to houston is the strand in galveston, where you can see beautiful homes, go the new pleasure pier, swim in some of the warmest waters in the US and have generally an all-around great time.

and last but not least are two of houston's greatest gems...it's incredible Hermaan park with the fabulous botanical gardens and reflecting ponds, and discovery green the new park/communit space that has something going on at all hours of the day

I am hating myself for dropping the hipsterish comment that 'spitalfields was so cool before it got commercialized' but sadly it's true, about 10-15 years ago the market was absolutely amazing! Now I feel like 'quirky' has become a brand, replete with fake mustaches made in china. The london markets however are still the most diverse, creative, incredible, vibrant marketplaces I've been to in the western world.

I hate to play the doctor card but as a physician and pet owner and mother I would strongly strongly advise the people posting here who say that 'cats in the kitchen on the counters are cool, no biggie' to be very careful. Cat feces, and even more so kitten feces can carry dangerous diseases that are particularly harmful to immunodeficient people and to pregnant women. As one can't know always who is immunodeficient or pregnant I would strongly recommend keeping your beloved felines out of the kitchen as much as possible. Our cat knows she is in big time trouble if she gets on the counter (safer for her, and much much safer for us).

I very rarely comment on the home tours but I LOVE this apartment, most especially the thoughtful layout of the kitchen, dining and living room. The coffee tables in the living room are brilliant and I love the tile in the bathroom. That front door!! I agree that I don't adore the sculpture over the bed but it might just be because I've seen so many corruptions of that style over time. Otherwise I love almost every detail! Great job!

one more for all the brunettes out there!

Put henna in your hair! Not only will it give you subtle highlights it's an AMAZING natural conditioner. You make it into a paste, rub it into your hair, wrap your head with an old towel and place another old towel over your pillowcase and I GUARANTEE the best night's sleep ever :) there is some sort of cooling property within it and it's amazing.

I used to get the blues too until my children were old enough to what to do stuff all weekend :) Now with toddlers and full work weeks sunday mornings are brunches with friends or family, sunday afternoons are play time at the park or zoo (with a delicious nap squeezed in) and then early dinner and a movie (special weekend treat at our house), by the time the kiddos are tucken in, the house is cleaned up there's just enough time to catch up on a grown up tv show or two before falling into an exhausted slumber

I had this EXACT same issue :)

I was so reluctant to alter it in ANY way including putting holes in it that I ended up just stapling the very ends of it around a piece of foam board I cut to size with an exacto knife, couldn't have been easier. I keep meaning to add white molding around it to make it look completely finished.

These are an ideal use for the millions of baby food jars I have lying around, transporting cupcakes is NOT easy and this way they can stay cute without me having to buy one of those overpriced 30 cupcake holders (p.s. buttercream is disgusting to me so I would just use a cream cheese frosting) perfect for the picnic!

As a physician who specializes in cancer imaging, every single minute of every single day I'm greatful I'm NOT in my department as a patient or a family member. I adore my houseguests! It's like a party/vacation when they're in town and we do way more activities.
Things I particularly appreciate are
- playing with the kids (trust me it pays to have host's kids be your new buddies)
- leaving the door open to the guest room (it also functions as our study so we may occassionaly need things from it.
- leaving the towels hanging on the provided hooks instead of from the curtain rod (my pet peeve) also
- leaving the door to the bathroom open after a shower, nothing worse than coming into a bathroom that's totally damp because someone steamed it up and then left the door closed.

We went there for our honeymoon! It was actually the most gorgeous place I've ever seen. It's like Hawaii in minature with NO multilevel hotels. I don't think you can build a building with more than two stories on the island and there are really strict rules about how many people can visit per day and how long they can stay. The only way to keep something that awesome pristine is some serious regulation.

I've been trying to figure out this same thing for our guest room (already have awesome shades just don't want to pay for professional install or ugly visible cords so I looked around and found these. A caveat I haven't tried them yet but for 5 bucks if they work they sound like a great solution especially if you're doing a bunch of lanterns
