Yes, it's hideous. Since it's a rental, I'd get a bunch of plants for the bottom (big bushy ones) and put something really eye-catching on the wall above the fireplace. If the stuff on the mantle is yours, it's nice, but it's never going to match the fire place so you should probably move it elsewhere.

I didn't see bgirl17's post, but I'd never have a cowhide rug, not even if the cow died of old age and left it to me in her will.

Robert's house is good, his art is great, but his lighting is phenomenal. Is it normally like that, or was it the photographer? This is a thoroughly high quality house tour.

I think the best advice is, if you love them, copy them. Cast, mold, dipdye.

I liked this story. Mine was a sight-unseen first floor 40's deco one bedroom in South Beach with jalousie windows and a view of the dumpster, and what a bargain it was! There was a gaping rectangular hole in the kitchen wall where the oven had been and a family of possums living under the eaves, but the tile and bathroom were all original and I could walk to the beach in five minutes.
