Go to an art supply store and buy a long piece of canvas off a roll (probably 4 ft wide x however high your ceiling is). Paint it Jackson Pollock-style or hire an artist to paint something abstract on it. Then hang it near the top of the ceiling's highest point so it hangs down to the ground. I repainted over something similar an old roomie left behind. Make sure to SAND before you prime! I didn't do that and now regret it... You can see raised lines where the colored stripes were, because the paint is so much thicker where they taped off and painted. Prime it white, then decide on bedding, etc, then paint. We have a similar concrete pillar and we created a spiral bookcase that wraps around it. The bookcase is made of plexiglass shelves held together with metal pipes and nuts/bolts.
