Amazing as always, and I love the attention to detail... but... it all comes off a bit stiff and corporate. And some of the few organic, human touches such as the zebra print chair seem to speak to a late realization that humans would be living here.

The San Fran house they built is more my cup of tea. Much more warmth. As a designer myself, I feel that sometimes working with constraints, such as those that came with the San Fran house really bring out the creative, problem solving impulses much more readily... whereas total freedom can be cloying.

The garage update is the only decent one of the Wired series... the rest are pretty uninspired (see the Media Room one).

Aesthetically, I feel like the kitchen is a step back (not just in a retro way). The retro oven and fridge do not play nice, the tile is hideous, the wood flooring and the cabinets do not play nice by being too close without being the same... overall the larger oven, the range hood mount height and resultant cabinet heights, the horizontal pull mounting, and the busy tiles make the space feel smaller than before and not cozy.

Chalkboard is always a nice touch though...

Great idea... I think it would also be wise to include information on how effective a given bulb is for dimming applications. Luckily when I was redoing the lighting for the home theater I went with the electrician to Home Depot. He had to warn off no less than 3 couples that were going with the compact fluorescents in dimmed environments because the ramping is terrible.

Interesting... two comments, on opposite ends of the opinion spectrum. I suppose its in the ear of the beholder.

I'm always slightly ashamed to voice my birthday wishes to the SO when she asks because they are almost always expensive tech of some sort. I would be happy with a gift card to Amazon or Apple, but that is apparently not weighty enough a gift for her.

Unless you fall into the category of folks that need to have the latest greatest on a seasonal basis, I say go big for those big purchases! My reasons are not always the most common since I work from home and can get more out of a faster computer... but even for computer purchases that are not work related such as a kitchen PC or HTPC, I find that they can fulfill a useful role for much longer as the tasks they are asked to do become more and more laborious as apps, plugins (Flash, I am looking at you) and growing media collections use more RAM, more drive space, more CPU cycles, more cores, and a greater proportion of the video processing power.

And as they eventually move on and make room for new computers, I've found that I've easily grown into that extra speed or storage that may have seemed excessive at one point and now makes for a very passable email server, or media server, backup computer, or travel laptop... And the cost to upgrade those older computers is usually very very low as the parts that may have been the height of technology in their prime has fallen considerably.

Probably the biggest thing that I could see upsetting this trend is cloud storage. But that is likely to only change your initial configuration for drive space...

That is extremely nice... I don't imagine I could work that close to the screen for any length of time, but its hard to argue with the results.

I agree with painting the bricks black, preferably matte black, as others have suggested, but I don't think that that solves the proportions issue entirely. My suggestion might be a little unorthadox, but the issue seems to be that the proportions are in a weird grey area relative to the insert... There is the wrong kind of tension, in need of real scale contrast. So I would propose extending the bricks all the way to the ceiling. Matching the new brick colors is a non-issue if you are painting them, and you can choose to keep the mantle or remove it entirely. Personally I would either remove it or replace it with something with a little more heft, something chunky and blocky to balance with the visual "weight" of the bricks.
