I saw this go up and thought, "uh-oh, here we go -- book haters, come on out and play." But I'm pleasantly surprised to see some awesome suggestions here. I'll be stealing some of these for our place!

Love it! For others, good luck keeping a cat off of or out of anywhere. Mine wouldn't stand for it, at least.

I love this post! My best friend in elementary school had seriously THE coolest house. They had a computer (in 1985! With Oregon Trail!), a swing in the living room (!), a horse, and a playroom filled with toys that used to be her mothers -- old board games, dolls, etc -- with a cutout in the closet floor that her father had put in for an underground play area. Ugh, that place was so amazing. Her father was from Spain and her mother was from Canada -- maybe that's why there was a place like that in Oklahoma? ;)

I agree -- to a point. I agree that most of the comments in the photo could be construed as constructive criticism, and those aren't the ones that bother me so much. The ones I hate -- and which I see here more than any other design site -- and the "Gross" "Ick" "Thanks but no thanks" types of comments on DIY posts. Also, most of the comments on house tours are, frankly, downright rude. Those essentially amount to an attack on personal style, and they make me sad.

It's gotten to the point where if I see a certain type of decor -- for exammpppllleeee, a house with lots of books? -- I scroll to the comments because I EXPECT to see a large amount of mean-spiritedness. What does that say about me, though? :)

I never comment, but I had to sign in to gush. This is probably my all-time favorite House Tour -- there is NOTHING I don't love about this place. This pretty much exemplifies my style and what I hope to transform our home into.

Beautiful! Also... maybe she painted the trim because she likes white trim more than the original color of the wood trim. *Shrug* just a thought.

I have a desk that my parents bought as an antique when I was a child, and that I now have in my home. It's never quite suited its surroundings. I hate the dark wood. But I was afraid for years to paint it -- mostly because people on websites like this had panic attacks and fainting spells anytime anybody so much as considered painting an HEIRLOOM and destroying the PATINA. So I called a reputable antique store and appraiser and told her that I had a desk, the finish wasn't awesome but it wasn't damaged or in poor condition, but I hate it, so I wanted to get it appraised and then see my options even though I hate it.

Her advice? This professional in the antique field, who makes her living buying, selling, appraising, and generally appreciating antiques? "We'd be happy to appraise it for you. But if you hate it, and would like it better painted or refinished, then paint it or refinish it."

I like the lines. I don't want to sell it. It's a sturdy desk, and I don't feel like finding another one. And I certainly don't want it taking up space somewhere else in the house until I "grow" into liking the way it looks. Which may never happen. So I plan to refinish it.

If you like the lines, and don't want to sell it, and don't want it taking up space while you get used to it or whatever, then paint it.

I leave. stuff. EVERYWHERE. Which is kind of hilarious because when my fiance's not out of town, I'm way too neat and snap at him for leaving the littlest thing out of place. I eat mac and cheese, usually for lunch AND dinner. I randomly go out to buy tea in the middle of the day. I watch weird movies on my laptop. I take everything out of the drawers and put everything back in, re-organized. I almost never change out of my pajamas. And I definitely don't work out.

We put up a tree and stockings at Christmas, but that's about it. I find that most seasonal decor doesn't go with our existing decor, and I'm too lazy to figure out a way to mesh it well :)

Thanks for the list! It's funny, because all my dogs growing up LOVED my mom's pasta. Anytime she cooked it, she'd make a plate for them. They sucked it up like nobody's business. They all lived over 10 years with no health problems! And her sauce was laden with onions and garlic. I wonder if maybe she just didn't put much sauce on there?

I've always heard the very best thing to feed your dogs is plain chicken and veggies.

Also, our cat FEASTS on our dog's food. It's pretty irritating. She would eat his food, but it's high up where only he can jump up to get it. But there's only so high we can put her food since she's a dog... and Andy will always get to it. Being a cat and all. But so far so good, no gained weight. He won't listen anyway!

And lastly, our weimeraner growing up ate a whole Hershey chocolate bar I left out when I was a kid and he had a big seizure. Of course, he always had seizures, so who knows. I always heard dark chocolate was the bad stuff, but apparently milk chocolate did a number on him!
