i'm american and i leave my shoes off. however, it mostly has to do with being raised in a semi-traditional korean family in america (most asian cultures leave shoes outside the door or in a hallway).

ikea has alot of affordable shoe cabinets and shoe racks. make sure the slot is is big enough for a pair of sneakers. i bought a shoe organizer from target and it can only fit my summer sandals and ballet slippers.

thanks for your comments! keep them coming since i'm still undecided. no one seems to be suggesting glass, and maybe that's a good thing because i was originally leaning towards a glass coffee table so that it wouldn't feel so dark and heavy in the center of the room, but an ottoman seems like the most practical thing since i lack seating for guests.

harlie, i found those dining chairs in the basement of my boyfriend's parents house. they are my favorite piece of furniture! i also took the 3 bulb lamp (from the 80's) from one of their guest rooms and the red chair with the beige cushion. they thought i was so weird for wanting all those things they considered junk.

i used an ikea lack shelf on my radiator for 3 years and it never caused a problem. however, i also had my radiator nearly turned off most of the time because heat radiated from the pipes sufficiently.
