I'm a lifelong New Yorker newly married to a Brit who has lived here about 3 years. I'm a novice at home organization/decor, but some of the wall art or decorative elements I'm choosing are sort of jokey references to his Englishman in New York status-- a "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster or a funny little Union Jack pillow that I may have actually found via this site. That's been my choice more than his, as he plays a very limited role in any home decor projects! Maybe it's an attempt at making him feel represented while showing him that I realize we're living on my "turf" right now and don't take it for granted. As for me representing NCY, we don't have anything yet, but I am trying to get a print of an illustration by Saul Steinberg that he did in the 1970s as a New Yorker cover-- View of the World from 9th Avenue. This little lamp would be the perfect way to add light and warmth to my makeshift dining area, which would help me convince my boyfriend to have more shared meals together at the table, which would in turn foster light and warmth in our relationship, which would possibly make him take a knee and $&*% propose to me already, which would get my *^@ grandparents off my case!!! Question for AT-ers: What do you guys think about buying used upholstered furniture like the black and white "club chair" listed here? Yes, I would really be interested to hear some resources for the better stuff for less! I'm trying to furnish my first "grown up" apartment on a serious budget. All my old funny, quirky, not-exactly-fully-functional secondhand furniture suddenly won't fly in this place. One thing I really want/need is a dresser that's big enough, with drawers that open and close smoothly. I like this one because it is beautifully simple without being "aggressively modern." Bobby, I am terrible at layout so I can't offer any advice-- I just want to say I absolutely love your space and the small punches of color all over the room. Could you tell me where you got that lime green file cabinet under your Parsons desk? I am looking for a file cabinet fun enough to actually make me want to file things, and this one looks great.
