The first picture has white bead board and cream colored wall paper with a diamond pattern. It looks nice.

I have a friend named Art. He loves to cook. He is always in the kitchen.

First of all, I love it! I like the light fixture you picked out, but I have to agree with thorndale regarding the rug, though. It does not have an industrial feel. Personally, I would use a black and white rug.
Thorndale also brought up painting the medicine cabinet silver, which would be nice. My first instinct on that one is to paint it a high gloss black to blend in with the black tiles.

That looks like triple stitch. I can do triple stitch *poorly, * I am very bad at keeping the stitches even. No Girl Scout cookies for me.
That is such a great idea, though! If it gets dusty, you can just hand wash it and drip dry it! Niiiiiiice!

I like the second incarnation. I'm not a particular fan of using chairs as beside tables, but that' just me. The wall color is lovely and the slanted ceiling gives the room a great deal of character. Where did you get the tall mirror? I also love the Henny blanket. The best feature? That calico snuggled on the bed!

I'm with FantasticMrFaux on this one. That piece screams "Andy Griffith Show" in a great way! I'm sure it will work fine with your 50s décor.

I remember seeing a This Old House feature on AT on how to build your own sideboard using stock kitchen cabinets. The one pictured looks much more traditional than what you're after, but you don't have to finish it the same way. Watching Tommy Silva work is always a treat. :)

The Ruth and Ollie one is fabulous, though! debralee suggested saving up to purchase it. This is a great idea, too. It's amazing where you can find money when you really want something! By the way, I'm going on the premise that you drink Maxwell House at home.

You are right-that wallpaper has got to go. I agree with the others regarding replacing the ugly light fixtures as well. You may want to replace the doorbell chime cover and the switch plates as well.
My color suggestion is a light-to-medium cheery blue (the inspiration coming from the vase on the table). A mirror or two on the walls will also help reflect natural and electric light and give the hallway an overall brighter feel.

Please - don't let my mother know about this thing. She will buy me one.
