or you could participate in Sharing Backyards which links people with unused yard space with those looking for a place to grow food. From what I've heard of the program, it really helps the clueless with space get the help they need with setting up a garden.

that is a cute basement kitchen!
I wonder if you guys could do a kitchen exploration of another cafe - Abraco on 86 East 7th Street
Every time I go I peer longingly into their TEENY TINY kitchen where the cook slings out pain perdu, gorgeous olive oil cakes and spanish tortilla among other things. It is just divine.

terracycle worm poop fertilizer. It's cool - they even bottle the solution in re-used plastic bottles!
I'm now psyched to try keeping my own worm bin and collecting worm-poop-tea for my garden. :)

I always think its kinda funny because a few of my friends have done it too and I personally can see how its pretty but my (more traditional) sister and mom are horrified.
Those papers that you guys got from Asia is joss paper that us Asian folk burn for the dead. Kind of like "afterlife currency", it is supposed to help your departed relatives "cope" in the afterlife. These papers are usually folded into ingots and burnt in memorial services to the dead. Some of these joss paper-craft even come in miniature 3-d (papier-mache-like) items: as basic as books, scrolls and even toothbrushes to luxury items like mercedes benzes and gold watches, cell phones etc.
When I told my family about the "decorative" paper my friends put up in their dorm, they were initially aghast - not a very auspicious thing to do, invoking the dead, "teasing" them with these "offerings" that you don't burn for them. Totally cracked me up when my mom suggested that I take them down without my clueless friends' notice and destroy them. I guess Asians don't find too much mirth in the dead, unlike the celebrations of Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos. Oh well.

Maybe there is a difference in the definition of "shiny"?

One thing maybe, and this is only from the advice given me for my brick walls when i exposed them, is to carefully wash the brick with some water with a touch of muriatic acid and rinse with water thoroughly. Get the dust off, take a look and then consider a low-gloss sealer first. Someone correct me if I am wrong but could one not add more "gloss" in another coat to get it more "shiny" so she has more options?

I can look up which gloss I used. It's very interesting, because it was a new product that was recommended for older brick, and only if you take a VERY CLOSE look does it look a little "pearlescent" (so hard to describe) but not glossy.

Just like how you wouldn't want to cut on stone or even stainless steel intentionally, I wouldn't want to cut foods on my wooden counters. Besides, since it is fitted over the sink, I would like to protect it for as long as possible - and I don't know how well it would hold up if it were only well-oiled. For baking and chopping purposes, I do have a lovely butcher block which is kept happy with mineral oil.

Wood - protected by a polyurethane finish.
Sure we have to be careful of the water but it makes the kitchen "softer".

Just one Mario Batali wooden tasting spoon - has two spoon ends, one smaller than the other. Very very handy!

kdkaboom: what kind of stains are you referring to?

My olive green one came from target, is gorgeous, takes easily to the wash as well to remove soap scum and such.

Like you I like the fun vinyl ones (the clear spaces give the impression of the bathroom being a little bigger) but it does seem wasteful to throw them once they got grotty (beyond redemption by scrubbing bubbles/bathroom cleaners).

Bamboo blinds that roll up - this is what I did to my kitchen to hide the hideous HVAC thingy. You get to choose colors to match the kitchen too.

This is one of my favorite fruits ever! I love globalization.
I know it as the chiku fruit where I am from - Singapore - and we have a little tree at my parent's house in a huge ceramic pot. It is like the juiciest candy when you get a super ripe one. Doesn't really have a "creamy" texture (to me that would be like the Durian - another gorgeous, and creamy fruit) but a silky, overripe pear would be a good description - one that tastes like brown sugar! :) And insanely good.
How we eat it back home: remove the skin, then slice in it segments lengthwise, the seeds kinda slip off so you can squeeze or spit them out. A light sprinkling of salt sometimes tastes good too. Street food hawkers cut them as above and skewer them on bamboo sticks and set them on ice to cool. *yum*

Pick as color that energizes you and the work you do in that area, or else something that you know will soothe you. Have you considered stripes of white along with the two colors you've picked? Could be a good compromise. :)
