Boy, this is a tough crowd (many of whom I strongly suspect are not parents)! My kids are now teens and I can tell you with 100% certainty that they do not need parental encouragement to learn/understand technology. They breath it like its air. When my kids were slightly older than the children of this couple, we got rid of cable TV and it changed our household for the better. We didn't make a big deal of it, didn't ban it at others houses, and we now have basic cable once again - all is good - no one permanently damaged - teens are happy - and as a family we were forced to be creative about how we spent our time together at the time. This is more about the parents pushing their own limits in their parenting by creating a particular environment for their kids for a year- the kind of thinking that makes good parents not bad ones.
