Our problem is that the very moment it gets warm, my family wants summer food. Corn on the cob, tomato sandwiches, cucumber salad - all the things we suggested for dinner last week are just not in season yet and wouldn't be satisfying. Such a bummer, so we're having mostly simple sandwiches and salads for dinner this week.

When Do You Lose Interest in Cooking? And 3 Tips for Beating the Springtime Slump

@SEAtoNYC - D'oh! I was hoping for something with a little more zing.

My best hangover cure is a glass of chocolate milk upon waking, made with skim milk and Quik, immediately followed by an hour and a half nap, then a greasy breakfast. I blame my dad for this.

"if I recall, there were two things (well, three actually) that cured a nasty hangover"

I think we need to know the third.

Too twee for me, but I'm sure my pre-schooler would love it. Maybe we'll make a small one with a broken pot that hasn't made it out of the garage yet to go in her butterfly garden - butterflies and fairies must be great friends, right?

If I try to plan on entertaining, I overthink the entire situation and wind up spending far too much time preparing, including cleaning and making way too much food. I've been trying to have more impromptu gatherings, which makes it much more enjoyable for me. Last weekend we had 8 adults and 4 kids for brunch, planned at 9 pm the night before, and we had a great time even thought he house was not spotless and brunch had a certain element of makeshift (one of our little friends who is allergic to eggs had toaster waffles instead of strata, and many snacks were doled out for the younger set).

Egg muffins with cheese and veggies (my favorite are feta and spinach), braised and shredded beef or pork for tacos/burritos/tostadas/nachos, cooked grains like barley and brown rice to use in quick soups or grain salads. As far as frozen fruit, I drank a lot of smoothies while I was on maternity leave, and frozen berries were my friend. Also, blanched and frozen greens (chard, kale, collards) are wonderful to throw in a quick broth with some pasta, rice noodles, or grain for an easy lunch or dinner.

And @PastaAMT - Any guests who show up at my house post newborn expecting me to provide them with cookies had best be planning on cleaning my bathroom. ;)

Hot Vernors ginger ale and wavy potato chips. And the Vernors has to be in a silly mug that my grandfather bought me as a child - it is rainbow striped with my baby picture on it, inscribed with "This is my mug". I miss living right by a decent deli with matzo ball soup, though!

What's Your Sick Day Dish?

When I was 17, I decided that I would make my parents a special dinner for my dad's birthday. The recipe called for 3 cloves of garlic, and I did not realize that the cloves were the small pieces inside - NOT THE ENTIRE BULB! Mom took one bite and said oh, honey, I think ya messed something up. My dad, on the other hand, insisted that it was fantastic, but he's pretty doting AND will eat Lebanese garlic sauce by the spoonful!

Ihave some kind of mental block about hard boiled eggs - do they go in when the water is still cold? How long do they boil? Or maybe it's really just a nice excuse to call my not-very-phone-friendly dad with a "reason"...

I don't know where you guys are buying your lamps at, but if the cords get so hot that they might be an ignition source, I suggest you replace them.

I think this is charming - reminds me of my dad and his buddies ca. 1979. There were all manner of collections in all manner of glass vessels that had been wired up as lamps. I think it was related to some kind of carpentry effect...

I usually stick around the AT and kitchn sites, but I think someone should be decorating a kid's room around some of this Detroit-area artist's work - http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5577889.
Her pieces are super charming and whimsical -everytime I see her stuff, it seems a shame that I'm not playing. (Nope, no relation or connection to her, just a big fan.)

@bedtime for gonzo - Love that your mixer is named Pete. If I had space to keep mine on a counter, I think I'd name it Karen.

Love the big lakes, and I frankly don't care if they're American or Canadian (although if I go over to the Ontario side, they do charge me a lot more for a fishing license). We're taking our summer vacation in Copper Harbor, MI, which I really think is the most beautiful spot in the world.

Ha! This happened in our house last week. I overestimated the amount of zucchini and summer squash that I could get in there and could only fit three eggs. It was delicious, and an excellent way to use up too many veggies!

I have an old Breadman (given to me by an aunt who never used it). This model - http://tinyurl.com/lcyjz2 - the link is to an ebay auction, $25. It's not fancy, but it has faithfully performed it's job 2-3 times a month for the last 4 years.

Oh, if we're talking drinks, I made a lovely the other night. I'd made waffles for breakfast, and cooked some nearly spent strawberries with a bit of sugar for waffle syrup. Later on saturday eve, I realized there was strawberry syrup. Went with -

rocks glass
ice
1 oz vodka
1 oz strawberry syrup
soda water

Was heavenly. :) Happy summertime cocktails!
