Ihave some kind of mental block about hard boiled eggs - do they go in when the water is still cold? How long do they boil? Or maybe it's really just a nice excuse to call my not-very-phone-friendly dad with a "reason"...

I don't know where you guys are buying your lamps at, but if the cords get so hot that they might be an ignition source, I suggest you replace them.

I think this is charming - reminds me of my dad and his buddies ca. 1979. There were all manner of collections in all manner of glass vessels that had been wired up as lamps. I think it was related to some kind of carpentry effect...

I usually stick around the AT and kitchn sites, but I think someone should be decorating a kid's room around some of this Detroit-area artist's work - http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5577889.
Her pieces are super charming and whimsical -everytime I see her stuff, it seems a shame that I'm not playing. (Nope, no relation or connection to her, just a big fan.)

@bedtime for gonzo - Love that your mixer is named Pete. If I had space to keep mine on a counter, I think I'd name it Karen.

Love the big lakes, and I frankly don't care if they're American or Canadian (although if I go over to the Ontario side, they do charge me a lot more for a fishing license). We're taking our summer vacation in Copper Harbor, MI, which I really think is the most beautiful spot in the world.

Ha! This happened in our house last week. I overestimated the amount of zucchini and summer squash that I could get in there and could only fit three eggs. It was delicious, and an excellent way to use up too many veggies!

I have an old Breadman (given to me by an aunt who never used it). This model - http://tinyurl.com/lcyjz2 - the link is to an ebay auction, $25. It's not fancy, but it has faithfully performed it's job 2-3 times a month for the last 4 years.

Oh, if we're talking drinks, I made a lovely the other night. I'd made waffles for breakfast, and cooked some nearly spent strawberries with a bit of sugar for waffle syrup. Later on saturday eve, I realized there was strawberry syrup. Went with -

rocks glass
ice
1 oz vodka
1 oz strawberry syrup
soda water

Was heavenly. :) Happy summertime cocktails!

Oy, there's a reason I never look at Staub. I'm having teapot envy.

While floral flavors aren't really my thing, I can't think of anything I wouldn't put maple jelly on/in. Pork glaze, on buttered biscuits, in baked beans, maybe some kind of bisquick sausage "pie" with a touch of it, out of the jar with a spoon... I have maple issues.

I'd guess it's a dresser, but it looks fantastic where you have it and it seems like a shame to hide such a great find in the bedroom!

Peppers (jalepeno, anaheim and pimento), summer squash, brussels sprouts, bush beans, broccoli (2 kinds), tomatoes (4 kinds), kale, chard (2 kinds), spinach, lettuces, basil (mexican, purple & giant), marjoram, thyme, parsley (flat & curly), dill. And we convinced our neighbor to put a small patch in her yard adjacent to ours for kohlrabi since it's her favorite thing.

Right now there are soy nuts, 2 luna bars, wasabi peas, cup a soup (at least 3 years old), green tea and Finn-Crisp crackers. In the fridge is a jar of natural peanut butter. Other things making regular appearances are dried apricots, raisins, individual natural applesauces, almonds, laughing cow cheeses and string cheese. And, of course, the evil cupboards full of M&Ms, Kit Kats, Snickers, Dove chocolates, Bit-O-Honeys, etc., etc. provided by the company. It's really beyond me why they do that, but they do.

The table is lovely - I agree with those who've suggested bright yellow, which I think would be great with the lampshade.

For those who are distressed by tissue boxes (I am not one of you, but I can understand), there was a nice little sewing solution here: http://makeitandloveit.blogspot.com/2009/04/tissue-box-cover.html - of course, it still looks like a tissue box, but prettied up with the pattern of your choice.

We use google calendar as our family calendar so that my husband and I can both easily make changes. I created an additional calendar titled "Dinner" and the menu for the week goes there. It's nice because it can be hidden so that the calendar isn't all cluttered, you can just move entries around if you change your mind during the week, I can go back and look at past meals (since November '07!), and if you go into "edit event details", you can drop in links to online recipes in the notes section.

My favorite menu planning was my mom's as I was growing up, though. She still has the stack of 1976-1993 Hallmark pocket calendars (the ones they used to give away for free) detailing every dinner I had growing up. It's awesome.
