There should be a formula that multiples the votes by some increment to account for the number of people living in small sq footage and/or if the space is also used as a work space.

Beautiful. I helped decorate three senior living spaces for my father in law. Two were on locked dementia wards. He and I had a blast shopping and arranging his space. It really reflected his world travels and eccentric personality. I have noticed that residents with nicer decor and a pleasing living space get more attention from staff. Right or wrong, an oasis draws people in.

Lots of good suggestions here. I saw one for Farrow and Ball paint. It is super expensive, and though great paint, not in everybody's budget. I am having my dining room painted today in Elephant's Breath color from F&B but it is Ben Moore paint that is color matched to the F&B color. I am using Natura paint and it is $35/gallon less than F&B. We will see how the results look. Certainly an option for getting the Borrowed Light color for less.

I had spaces like this in all of my homes in my 20s. A few years ago I realized I had stopped creating these little friendship shrines somewhere along the line. For the same reason I don't display pictures of friends and family, I haven't continued displaying objects of friendship: I like feeling them in my heart more so than seeing reminders of them in my space. It's not that one cannot do both, but for some reason, I'm really not into visual reminders of the people I love.

I love how smartly you restrain yourselves so the bones can really shine through. Simply beautiful.

Love the marble walls in your Instagram bathroom picture. Your place is sweet and adorable. My favorite part is the trim. It really does look like a cake. And, wow, what a landlord. They must really adore you if they are adding a deck as a surprise. Are you or this person single? That sounds to me like some serious apartment flirting.

How can anybody be over subway tiles? They are so classic and enduring. Who needs these alternatives?

Nobody has addressed the toddler issue. How toddler proof are these suggestions above? I do not have a kid so I do not know. I would place a rod up near the ceiling on the bedroom side. Anchor the rod in to the wall very well. Then hang curtains from clips that are not too tight so if the tyke pulls on them, the rod does not fall but instead the curtain is simple yanked from the clip.

I have often thought it would be helpful to have a website that compares neighborhoods in different cities with both objective criteria, such transit, distance to downtown, home prices, as well as subjective experiences of people who know these neighborhoods well. Having recently moved from Chicago to Philly, I often comment on the talk section of Yelp, helping those moving between these cities figure out what neighbhoods are similar.

I was excited to read that my idea had come to fruition but my god is this an offensive train wreck, not to mention extremely inaccurate. The Philly descriptions paint with a wide brush and neglect the lives of families who have lived for decades in old neighborhoods and still do. I laughed at the Fairmount to Upper East Side equation. How? In what universe? That writer is on crack.

William H. Macy and Laura Dern are a couple showing their abode on apartment therapy? That was my initial thought at first glance of the opening picture.

My favorite part of the home is the ceiling in the living area. Nice and grungy. Also love the size of the dining table in that huge space.

I do consider myself fortunate that my aesthetic tends towards vintage so I have a large selection of made in USA as well as the ability to see what has been of quality in that it is still in good shape after decades of use. I think with furniture one has to be careful about the perception of quality and made in the USA. There are plenty of crappy sofas coming out of North Carolina. While I like the idea of Made in the USA being a potential symbol of quality, it is not. And sometimes products made in Europe are better and give me the peace of mind that they hopefully were made under fair labor laws. Still, I dream of being able to buy everything made in USA and products of quality. My husband and I long ago set an income threshold and decided once we crossed it we would start to buy from independent stores and made in USA when possible. We have arrived at the threshold and it is still a challenge to find the right products. I wish AT had an ongoing shopping guide for such finds.

One cannot help but noticing how dang in love this couple is and what a great round table they have. I have to disagree about the zero clutter statement though.

I have to dig up the report. I think it was on Marketplace on NPR. I do not think they said they would pay up to 50% more, I think it was a vague stat with no price figure: x% of Americans said they would be willing to pay more for a product made if it were made in the United States.

@Andrewpflynn - No matter what the additional percentage it costs to purchase a product Made in the USA, I do not think it is about resting on the laurels of location. It does cost more to produce any kind of widget in a factory in the USA that regulates the safety of its workers - hopefully, and pays more than a dollar a day. That speaks more to the quality of life for the citizens, and sometime for the environment, than it does to the quality of the product. If the quality of the products are equal, it is worth it to me to support American workers and American families. Sometimes buying American made is cost prohibitive or simply not possible. I try to buy less in general and save up for products that are higher quality and made in the USA. Sometimes you do not have to pay more either. If you start looking at where products are made, you will sometimes stumble upon items made here for the same prices as ones made in China.

The powder too is fantastic. We are trying to figure out where we can fit one in our house. I wish the basement stairs were not underneath the staircase to the first floor. It is such a perfect space.

I am surprised that the Made in USA didn't get more votes. I recently heard that a very large percentage of people would be willing to pay more money for most products if they were made in USA. (If my brain were not Swiss cheese I would remember the exact percentage.) And, more than 50% of people in China would prefer to purchase something made in USA.

I have thought about starting a Made in USA website. I know many exist, but they are pretty half-assed. I'd love a really, really good resource.
