We currently live in a wide open loft in Brooklyn with a total of 4 (very cool designed) vintage industrial clothes racks. I am so sick of looking at them, I'm about to lose it. Our clothes smell like last nights dinner and the moths are starting to attack. The only room we are building in the space will be a walk in closet lined with cedar - can' wait. Try using sign vinyl cut into stips, applied to mouldings, then trimmed down with a razor blade. Here is the important part. Before applying the vinyl to the trim, touch the sticky size to a towel or piece of fabric (felt works well). This picks up enough lint so that the vinyl will be easily removed, but leaves enough adhesive to stick to the surface. This whole process can be very time consuming if you are going to do it right - you cant just slap it on. This technique also works for applying sign vinyl to walls. I don't mean to sound negative but, since its not a Herman Miller Eames design, it will be nearly impossible. No one makes a reproduction base for a knock-off unfortunately, and a new Eames base will cost more than your chair is worth and will not fit. Better off buying a new chair at your local flea market. It's not so precious of a piece that painting should be eliminated as an option. I would have it sanded and sprayed it a medium grey a matt lacquer. Keep all the original hardware. It actually appears that the orange is just the plastic film used to protect the acrylic from being scratched.
