@Parnassus: I hear you re: greys. Can you please recommend paint colours/brands in caramel? Also, any suggestions for accent colours to update beige (i.e. BM "desert tan")? I love your comments on AP and might be interested in hiring you for an online consultation if you do that kind of work. (I'm based in Vancouver, Canada.)

This fermented mustard is tough to live - I'm talking from experience. Previous owners of our home painted it in a room that goes up 20 feet. I'm still trying to get rid of it.

I'm not feeling it with the parquet floor, either. It's very unappetizing.

The charcoal damask is fun, though.

Great suggestions, everyone - thanks so much for the help. I wish I could repaint the entire downstairs but I'm working with accent colours my husband loves (the yellow and orange). And sadly, he won't let me paint the wood trim on the stairs.

Chocolate would work (thanks for that tip!) but I really want to brighten the khaki room, so I probably won't take that route.

Right now I'm leaning towards a warm grey like the carpet - maybe something by Farrow and Ball.

I'll keep you posted!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your ideas!
I have great news: my husband consented to having the cabinets painted! Now I'm grappling with which shade of white/cream to use and what to do with the backsplash. As I mentioned, the granite counter has hints of salmon as well as grey, chocolate and rust - none of which go with mustard walls (but my husband doesn't want the walls changed too - he doesn't like change much!). As for the rustic painting, I'm going to broach that one after the cabinets are done...
Any suggestions for backsplash tiles? Are glass tiles on their way out?
