BTW, Sage in Kensington, MD (near DC) has a pair of chairs like the third photo (Boston) - though a bit pricey at $135 each. But they will negotiate.

Ah, Oneformybaby, but burning drippings off the coils stains the bottoms of your cookware.

Icky awful greasy stains smoking eugh.

Which is why I won't buy nice cookware until I'm somewhere with a gas stove.

Another vote for sugru! The stuff is indestructible, washable, soft, formable and won't burn you.

Unfortunately, it only comes in black, blue, green and orange.

Reclaimed floors can be awesome. My parents have beam flooring in their bedroom - they show no dirt, scratches or dings, but are still silky-smooth on the feet.

Dulcibella - no, they don't expect you to rearrange your life, but they also want to give you a heads-up that you're invited. So you don't make other plans. Also, so if it's a long trip for you, you can get going early and get vacation time, a dog sitter, deals on tickets, rooms, etc. Especially since Miss Manners says you don't have to mail invites until 4-6 weeks in advance and so many get down to the wire on that...

michpc - the extra envelopes are a tradition from a time when the mail was delivered by horseback, got dirty, and was opened by a servant. The interior envelope was delivered to the actual invitee, clean and unopened. They are totally unnecessary today, but since it's tradition, some people still use them. Of course, if we were going for tradition, folks wouldn't include RSVP cards - you're supposed to write back your congratulations and attendance on your own stationary - but no one would ever get around to it...

The goal of the gimmicks is to be memorable. If they're as close as being invited to the wedding, you'll probably remember if they just sent an email...except they're super excited, and this is their first chance to share that, so they go nuts. Just be happy for them.

Last year I used the Polar Bear and Big Horn Sheep from USPS for my holiday cards. Nice wintry colors, same artist (so they match!), and only 1c more than the price of a regular letter stamp (this year).

I do laundry every 2-3 days - sorted (blacks, lights, mids, towels, rugs/rags). But my best trick for keeping it from eating my day is to do it when I'm gone.

My new-ish washer has a timer. I put the laundry just as I walk out the door in the morning, set an 8hr timer, and the load is just wrapping up when I get home at night. Toss it in the dryer when I walk in the door, and by the time I'm done walking the dog/starting dinner/running a few errands, it's ready to be put away. And since it's only one load, it only takes about 10 minutes.

Granted, it usually sits around until I need the basket again, but hey. I work with engineers. They don't care if I'm wrinkled.

Just echoing what a lot have said before - crate training is an excellent way to make your dog feel at home and keep them safe.

You see a cage.

They see a space where they feel secure, no one bothers them, and they aren't underfoot. Bars don't mean the same thing to them as to us.

It's a godsend for housebreaking both puppies and adult dogs, keeping a new adoptee or foster from destroying things while you're out, or just getting a break from one another - don't set her up for failure, have her in a place where she won't get in trouble!

And because it's their den, don't ever go in there. Don't use the crate as a punishment, and don't punish while in there. Once Java is in her "room," I pretty much ignore her - she's taking a break. She'll come out, or let me know, when she's ready to be social. Especially in the beginning, I used to hide treats in her crate when she wasn't looking, and she totally has all sorts of happy associations with being in there.

Plenty of dogs "graduate" from a crate, but many need them for life - separation anxiety, chewing, getting into stuff in the kitchen...

I cover mine with a spare sheet - looks awful, but it gives her a little privacy and plenty of airflow.

I learned to save your first paystub, your last paystub of the year, and your last paystub with an employer. Now you have a record of when you started, when you ended, how much you made each year, and theoretically, how much you made total.

Or, you can convince your employer to do online paystubs. When I applied for a loan, I just went and printed off the last 2 - and in general, we save wads of paper that way.

I've been broken into twice...in Takoma Park!

Alarm systems are for crap - they're there and gone in no time flat.

I didn't feel safe until I got a dog. Some folks say any dog will deter intruders, but personally, having a big, scary looking dog, or at least a scary sounding dog (my current baby is a marshmallow, but she's got a convincing grumble), or at least an enormous poop by the back door seems to give me peace of mind.

The good news is that some large dogs are couch potatoes and don't need a lot of space or exercise. Go for a Great Dane.

I put BM "Calm" on the ceiling and trim of my bathroom because side-by-side, it matched the tile.

It does not match the tile, but it also doesn't call attention to itself. It actually looks great.

I used BM Celery Salt for the trim in much of the house, but it's far from white - a greeny-creamy color which looks better than it sounds. It's also the exact shade of "white" in all the Amy Butler fabric I'm using to sew curtains, lampshades, etc.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one who loves Oriental rugs! Instant sophistication, quality, and softness. And they clean up so nicely (and hide stains).

Love how much light you got in here - in AT terms, it's not terribly bright, but for DC, it's positively greenhouse-worthy.
