This is lovely - I just wish it worked so well for me! I find that when I'm upset or having a hard time anything I cook or bake usually turns out terrible. I suppose that doesn't mean that it still can't be therapeutic, but I often end up even more frustrated. Sigh.

Mine is just a shot of tequila (whatever they have that's 100% agave) over ice with two lemons. Ginger is never ginger in dive bars!

I absolutely suffer from this. I first realized it when I went on a walk with an ex when it had previously snowed but was starting to rain, and it looked like there were tiny clam "shows" all over the sidewalk. He started calling them sidewalk clams and I nearly lost it. It doesn't happen with food for me so much as it does random objects, and I mostly associate it with insects. I've had dreams about my entire body being infested with ticks or worms where they burrow into holes in my skin. I could feel them on my body for days after the dream - I have a recurring knot in my back and all I could think about was a worm burrowing into my skin. The cantaloup and lotus seed pod were the worst of this bunch for me. The rest seem okay. I don't recall any specific cooking experiences being triggering for me.

Thanks everyone! I ended up adding poppy seeds, cardamom, and almond flavoring to the batter and am going to make a very very vanilla-beany buttercream to frost it, and top with lots more poppy seeds.

I am ridiculously lucky in that there is a Safeway as well as a QFC within two blocks of my apartment. However- I avoid them both like the plague and generally walk an extra half a mile to my nearby co-op and Trader Joes. Yes, life is rough in the city.

Oh geeze. I actually broke my two top front teeth in half in a bike accident a few years ago. Due to how bad it was, and the fact that my health insurance didn't kick in for another month- I went nearly four months with no top front teeth! I couldn't bite into anything.

I ate lots of polenta (both sweetened with spices for breakfast, or savory with cheese and greens or tomato sauce), oatmeal, and quinoa. I also just learned to bit things with my teeth on the side, or cut things into pieces that I could put in my mouth and chew with my back teeth. And, this is so bad, but I so love it- Progresso soup clam chowder is my favorite thing in the world when I can't really chew. It's still chunky, but you can basically just mash everything in it with your tongue.

That IS my kitchen more or less always! My solution was/is a little bit of a commitment and does still require a bit of space- I bought a butcher block kitchen cart and use it to store pots/pans/appliances/silverware and use the top as my normal kitchen work space. I would be an absolute disaster without it.

I'm spending a weekend entirely by myself (SO glorious!) and wanted to make myself something wonderful and simple for dinner tonight- this is it! I'm going to make myself some beautiful zucchini bread for dessert and drink a glass of wine or two to go with it. Thank you!

So thrilled to see this here. I live in Ballard and love what's going on in our community. Ballard Bee Company is just a tiny part of everything that's kicking ass!

I've given up soap (and facial cleansers) but haven't been able to make that transition with my hair yet. I just cut it much shorter so I may give it another try!

Thank you SO much everyone! I love all of these ideas!

The dinner was actually last night and I ended up bringing a jar of my homemade raspberry jam. Our host was thrilled and immediately opened it and added it to the table with our cheese course. He's actually a wine writer so I was REALLY intimidated by the idea of bringing wine.

Flowers, fresh herbs, dish towels, chocolate, and salts are all on my list for future events!

I'm really curious about the edibility of different species. I've only seen one type in Seattle- but I'm from Southeast Alaska where we used to pick and eat a very different variety. They were far more tender and sweet- I'm not in love with the variety here. Is it possible that they're really the same or we were eating something we maybe shouldn't have been? I've never gotten sick from them and we used to eat quite a few.

SarahBerneche- lox is traditionally a form of smoked salmon- being "cold" smoked rather than "hot" smoked- which results in your firmer, flakier smoked salmon. This is technically just cured salmon with smoke flavor added- but a really great alternative to the expensive stuff.

@ Chris in DC - I don't doubt that- but I don't think they were referring to more than one lox? I worked in a fish smokery for years and it was always just plain old "lox". Guess it's just not what I'm used to hearing!

Looks great- but you made me cringe a bit with the use of "they". Lox isn't plural!

Ugh, what tragically perfect timing. I've been fighting a nasty stomach bug for the past three days. Finally feeling a touch better today but haven't held much down.

Yesterday all I wanted was Panda black licorice- it stayed down so I've kept eating it. I also had miso soup, and this morning toast with PB and honey and some Jelly Belly sport beans that I usually use for electrolytes on my long runs. Lots of water and club soda mixed with homemade ginger syrup.

Have this in the oven right now! Halved the recipe, but kept all of the garlic, and had to sub out a dry hard cider for wine, as it's all we had. Should be wonderful, regardless!
