I've been wanting one for a long time, but they always seem WAY over priced for what they are: a hinged box with upholstery.

I would love to see a DIY tutorial from AT.

Sustainability is the way of the future. Get rid of lawns and anything else hungry for more water (or other resources) than your climate provides naturally. This might mean drought-tolerant and native selections. Allow yourself just one area to irrigate, such as a place for veggies or favorite flowers, let the rest exist sustainably.

Error: Whole House Building Supply "in" San Francisco DOES have a brick-and-mortar location. It is in San Mateo on Amphlett Blvd. And yes, they also organize demolition sales on location all over the Bay Area -- sign up for email notifications.

Like Portlandrules, sometimes I feel like my taxes are subsidizing the child-centric lifestyle. I'm okay with funding good schools and healthcare for kids, but giving adults a tax break for each dependent, no matter how many?? I feel like child-free people should be the ones getting a tax break for helping the planet and community by NOT reproducing.

Being child-free, we have time to volunteer, time to work longer hours at non-profits, time to help others with their childcare, time to grow our own food and share it, etc. Why is that lifestyle less valued (by the tax code, for example)?

Scavenger used to be fun. Now there's hardly ever anything posted from my region (and it's a big one). I miss the old one with CL finds.

The previous owners of my house had done exactly this (we inherited all the furniture).
I took it apart to make a bean trellis. Detach the sides, attach into an A shape... done.

I have 2 #13s (low rectangular version) on my closet floor for laundry. They are the perfect size for 1 load each and fit perfectly under the clothes rod! I had originally wanted the beautiful #5 when I was looking online, but I'm glad I have #13 because they are a great use of space.

Editors, I love this roundup! Only thing to make it better is listing prices for each.

My peeve is the electric toothbrush. It's ugly, it has an ugly cord that has to be plugged in, it's hard to hide. One day I'll see if an electrician can put an outlet INSIDE my vanity!

Also, there's not enough space for hanging towels in the small bathroom. I'm thinking of switching to hooks, but worry the towels won't dry well enough.

Our previous owners left EVERYTHING since it was an estate sale, sold by an adult son. Selling/donating/sorting someone's entire life's possessions was a huge task.

Top finds: deer antlers, darkroom enlarger, urn with ashes (returned to family), complete National Geographic collection 1930s-2000s, British bike from 1953, hand-carved hawk decoy, and an airplane propeller

Those were weird but we were really grateful to keep the lawnmower, wheelbarrow, ukelele, a dresser, lawn chairs, hand tools, glassware, Wedgewood stove, cast iron pans, vintage maps, darning eggs, and walnut slabs.

Exterior Paint Colors with Light Gray Roof? Good Questions
7/26/12 7:46 PM

Hi, I'm the owner of the house and just want to thank everyone for their input and support! It's our first home and we're lucky to be only the second owner (but it needs a lot of work).

A note on climate: we're in California, with no A/C, like most modest homes in the area. The front door is currently white, but there's a screen door in front which makes it look dark. The screen door is really needed for cross-ventilation, but it might hide a pop of color on the door.

The big shrub by the front door is a coral-pink rose (so old and huge it's earned its place) and the small tree by the street is a lemon. The other plants will go, eventually.

Since moving here in May, I've been taking "before" photos like a mo-fo. Maybe someday I'll have the "afters" for you! My goal is to be AT house-tour-worthy by 2015. :)

What is with these posts where the photos don't match up with the descriptions? Not good design.
