Here is an easy and quick solution that will add lots of impact while working with what you have:
I agree with Lacey C and would absolutely paint the brick white if you can and leave the other walls as they are. Bring in a standing lamp in the corner to the left of the fireplace to visually pull you into the room. You have a great pieces but the color of the brick and the sofa are too similar which is adding to that feeling of drabness. Also punch up the color of the throw pillows on your sofa, bring in some of the brighter blues/teals or fabrics that pick up on the tone and colors of that great floral pillow you have. Good luck I think you're almost there!

White, white, white :) your place will feel much more "lofty."

Here's a great one: Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45, get the sample or look at a chip (online colors are not accurate). It's not too warm or too cool.

Enough already with the accent pillows + neutral sofa combo! I say go for it, the fact that you're even considering it makes me think that you are willing to push yourself design wise, so why not just go there? Taking that design risk is often what takes a room from being ordinary to awesome. You can always slipcover w/ a neutral tone later if you regret it :)

Really well done. And the style description of "elegant circus" is just too perfect.

Oooh, that's a tough one. I get the sentimental attachment to the items and the fact that they're beautiful and timeless doesn't help. It may be painful but I would sell the Tiffany and get the Heath! They are also beautiful and timeless and if you're using them everyday then what more could you ask for. I like the idea of taking a photo of them for sentimental value, you could throw a dinner party themed around the plates and then say goodbye!

We've been traveling in the car a lot lately with our 2yr old and he always asks for audiobooks. Shorter stories seem to work best for us right now and often he wants to listen repeatedly to the same story. "Where the wild things are" is fantastic. Other favorites are "the giant jam sandwich", "chicka chick boom boom" read by Ray Charles, and "the little enginenthat could".

A couple more ideas:

Since the whites of the two furniture pieces don't match you could swap out the Lack shelf for one w/ color such as the RED one which would reference the orange/red color happening in the room beyond.

If you want to keep it simple I would just move the equipment to the far right of the shelf (which would help minimize the cord action), and have a couple of horizontally stacked books underneath the tv.

Introduce something in a natural wood tone (bowl/vase/sculpture/object) to the shelf to add some warmth

Definitely paint the wall a dark color, a dark gray would work.

we were in a similar situation last year when we were expecting and didn't want to move out of our brooklyn 1 br.. We created a room in part of the living room by having a contractor put in drywall and a semi-transparent partition (we were blocking a window) from nyslidingdoor.com. This has worked well for us. If you don't have that much room to work with you could also partition your bedroom by using a ceiling mounted curtain track and a curtain (the heavier the better to block light, noise etc.). I agree w/ the earlier post, purge, purge, purge and go easy on what baby stuff comes into the house, you really don't need that much at all (although there are so many cute well designed items out there it can be hard to resist).

fyi while this sling is absolutely gorgeous I found that is was not very comfortable or practical for baby wearing (I tried it and several others while meeting w/ a baby wearing doula). . . the fabric at the shoulder is too narrow and not supportive enough . . . kangaroo korner and moby wraps are great alternatives for comfortable and stylish slings/wraps.
