I did this last summer with wine+soap drop. ALSO they hate the smell of peppermint, so you can splash a little peppermint oil here and there in the kitchen. It smells great and the flies leave!

Reader Tip: The Quick & Simple Way to Banish Fruit Flies

THANKS! I always make it a point to express gratitude (verbally, financially, etc) whenever someone extends themselves to the gluten free set. Just before reading this post I was invited to a surprise birthday party/concert in the park affair and these will be perfec to make so again, THANKS! Some suggestions: I find putting oil on my fingers helps to shape gf batter/dough since, as you found, the gun tends to make it sticky. I don't know of it would work for this particular recipe, but pizza dough is easily shaped using saran wrap. Also, like traditional cookie dough, gf dough benefits from waiting awhile before baking. This helps the flavors to blend better thus diminishing the distinctive flavors of gf flours. lastly, my aim as a gf-baker is to learn which flours taste best with each type of recipe with the idea in mind that gf are often superior to wheat flour depending on what you're trying to achieve.

That said... 1 in 133 Americans are estimated to have celiac disease. Far more Americans have a gluten intolerance. I am one of the few with a bonafide allergy to gluten. In my experience, if you think you have a problem with gluten, you probably do. It's hard to eliminate, but ask the countless people who have and they'll tell you how it's absolutely worth the effort... and it gets easier everyday because a) our bodies and habits adjust and b) society is coming around... Forbes mag just ran an article about the future of the gf food market. Money speaks. So does gratitude : ) Thanks Kitchn!

Ew. Saying the 'hating Walmart trend' is so last week is like saying 'going green' is so last week... Just because we're bored of a problem doesn't mean it's solved. Walmart and chains like it have irresponsible business practice. That lamp was likely made in China where worker rights are a problem. Fossil fuels were used to get it from its point of origin to Anytown Walmart. From posts above, I gather it wasn't made well and can be unsafe. It's cute, but it's not overwhelmingly cute. People, the point is not to blame and shame, it's to know where your dollar goes... to consider what you're giving up or giving onto to obtain a _thing_ and... to have things of quality in your home... If we focus on creating and/or procuring _want_ rather than what we don't want or consider to be 'evil', the road to economic and environmental recovery will be smoother. Spend your money! Just spend it in accordance with the things you value most. My guess is that lamp isn't one of those things.

What's your budget, Lydia?

Better lighting. String lights, maybe. You could pin a string wall to wall on which to hang some colored paper lanterns. At Cedar we can paint. I like the suggestions above for paint if that's an option. Bear in mind the level of wear and tear for things like seat covers and floor rugs... also the school might have issues with rugs because of trip-factor. If you can't paint you could go to rastorbator.com to make some colorful murals. I'm teaching ancient greece this year so I blew up some greek columns and printed them on colored paper. They look GREAT and go all the way from counter to so they draw the eye up and make the room appear more spacious-- key with so many kidlets this year! You could laminate iconic photos to jazz up the computer stations.

Can you put the cameras on a library cart and wheel it back and forth between office/closet and classroom? Or is that a pain? Could you put a locking cabinet in the corner next to the clock? You could probs advertise on CL for a donation if the school/district doesn't have one already. Can you bring in an extra table thing as like a "home base" for your papers/handouts/whatnots. Are those walls bulletin boards? If not, you might want to get at least a small one for announcements, absent work, etc.

Remember to pace yourself! Don't feel like everything needs to be just-right this year... you have a lot on your plate as a new teacher.

The womyn missed you last night :)
