AT, is there any way you can review the different kinds of thin brick out there for "green-ness" and ease of use? That would be soooo useful!

I think the best people to ask are the ones for whom you are making the room home-like. Your students will be full of ideas and when you use them, they will feel a sense of ownership. If you are a language arts teacher, you could have them write an essay on their ideal room and then surprise them by incorporating elements from their work into the room.

If you can get a collector to buy it on Ebay, awesome (though I doubt that someone would want it as an "original fixture" when buying your house). I wouldn't be afraid to highlight the structure of the piece using bright red spray paint, or you could go with a softer affect using aquamarine paint and lining the glass portions with a pretty patterned paper.

Wow! I wish I had a course like that in college! I actually once made up a list of things I would like to teach my children (currently 2 years old and 4 months old) before they leave the nest. It included things like basic gardening, meal preparation, nutrition, money management, home maintenance, car repair, physical fitness, and social skills. To that I would now add critical analysis of information from the media, how to dress appropriately, and ideally, sensitivity to the needs of others. Call me old fashioned, but I sure wish I'd learned those things before I left home.

I doubt that you can paint it - kinda dangerous on a hot stove! - but I bet you can really change the look by changing the background behind it and underneath it.
