From what I understand, cracked bowls should be discarded immediately - even minute exposure to the unglazed ceramic can leach chemicals into hot food. The glaze is basically protection. Otherwise, I keep the chipped in rotation! No biggie!

We've had success with some tough invasive like star thistle... wait until it gets really hot, hopefully in late spring when the weeds are still getting a foothold...water the area well, cover with plastic wrap and weigh down the edges of the plastic. leave it to bake for as long as you can bear to look at the plastic....!

I'd stay away from cedar chips - but we always toss our egg cartons in when we're done with them, toilet paper rolls (if you buy green paper, so no nasty glues & chemicals), and have a bale of straw by the bin to layer our kitchen compost. Never compost newspaper with colored ink! Those may contain heavy metals.

Let's use paper straws instead of plastic! For instance... http://www.graygoose.com/collections/all/products/paper-straws OR http://www.kikkerlandshop.com/cu13bl.html OR http://www.etsy.com/listing/48298975/50-striped-paper-straws-kelly-greenwhite

I mean - buy recycled paper and recycle your paper. Great! But is this 1992? We must have moved past this as the sum-total of our advice about taking steps toward "going paperless"?
