It seems like running a pan over low heat for 30 min every time you clean it just to seal in the seasoning isn't the most "green" thing to do...

Personally, I bought a pan that looked a little rusty (not horribly rusty) and just wiped it with a paper towel and oil, and the rust went away. It's been pretty great ever since, though I do reapply oil pretty regularly. I'm not sure if I have a layer of "seasoning" built up since I do wash with soap, but my pan is a nice shiny black and works well for me!

ah, clicking on the tutorial would have been a good idea. It looks like it does wash well! Now I just need to find something like citrasolv or wintergreen oil here in Israel...

Does anyone know if this stands up to washing? I really like the faded look... but I wouldn't want it to get TOO much more faded. :)

I just embroidered a pillow the other day! It's black and white, but I guess this makes me on trend?

I kind of like the before the best too... maybe because it looks a lot like my bedroom. :) Peaceful!

If you don't care about preserving the view, cover the windows with a translucent film? Some kinds can be easily removed.

I live in Israel and collect this water too! I use it to water my plants, not flush... you're making me wonder if we can switch around our habits.

Don't feed the cats! I live in Israel, which also has a huge cat problem, but feeding the cats just exacerbates the problem by helping the population grow even more. See what kind of organizations work with street cats in your country and see what can be done about spaying/neutering. Then put up a good fence / get a dog. We had a huge cat problem in the stairwell of our building (a cat decided to poop right outside our door multiple times a day... yeah, help THAT) and we seem to have fixed it simply by putting mesh up around our entry area (which before was easy for cats to enter through.

I love cats and own three, all rescued from animal shelters or the street, but people who have never lived in countries with cat infestations have no right to say "feed them."

You can also heat the milk and the yogurt in a crock pot for two hours, then turn off the crockpot, wrap in a towel, and let sit overnight. I did this for a few weeks, but I ultimately decided that the time and dishwashing wasn't worth 75 cents

I think it will look TOO matchy and coordinated if you go with light teal. I second the khaki suggestion-- I even think it could look awesome if the khaki tends slightly green!

I agree that AT has seemed derivative lately. I mean seriously, how often do we see before-after shots from Design Sponge? While these posts are credited in SMALL text at the bottom, their sources aren't emphasized anywhere in the posts themselves, which seems dishonest and lazy.

Cool project! I've love to see more makeovers like this on Apt Therapy... and not just guy spaces.

You can also roast peanuts in the microwave... seriously. Just do two-minute bursts on slightly reduced power and they roast right up. Works for my peanut butter!

Microsuede saved me. Our cats can't get traction into it. Leather is the worst, because while they don't scratch it, they gouge holes in it just be running across the chair backs.

I have some pieces posted it tight, heavy cotton fabric (think Ikea fabrics) and that seems to work well too. Anything slightly loose or textured = watch out. No tweed for me either!

Btw, I would add that I think the best idea is to google images of "dark red dining rooms" and see what you find that you like. This can give you a better sense of your own style as well as a good idea of color combinations that work. Personally, I'd suggest a lot of soft gray, cream, white, and pops of turquoise, but that might not be your style.

Why not paint the ceiling? Even if you don't add molding, you can certainly tape off a clean, level line around the room and paint the ceiling that way. All it takes is a little extra time invested to make sure the line is perfectly level. A color slightly warmer than white might look great there.

Seriously, though, this is a great example of how the same bones can look hugely better if they're accessorized well. Thanks for the inspiration!

I just discovered the blog "the lettered cottage" (from the first picture) and love it... I'm not even particularly into cottage style (doesn't work in Israeli apt buildings! :) but I'm very inspired by Layla and Kevin's ideas.
