Hm. How old are your daughters? When I was 13 and my sister 11, my sister complained to my mom about the way she had hung up one of her skirts to dry (apparently it left a crease down the center) and that was it - we had to do our own laundry from then on. If your kids are old enough to be choosy about what they wear, perhaps they're old enough to take care of their things on their own?

For just the two of us, we keep a hamper in the bedroom with three compartments - one for jeans (which we both wear every day to work) and heavy dark things like sweatshirts, which we probably do a load of every 7-10 days, one compartment for lighter weight brights like tops and underwear and socks, which we do every 5-7 days depending on how much we're exercising (working out regularly has the annoying side effect of creating more laundry!), and one compartment for whites - napkins, towels, undershirts, which we do whenever it's full, which depends on use. We only have white linens, including sheets, which helps. We wash the sheets every other Sunday, sometimes in combination with towels or whatever's in the whites bin.

My husband's dress shirts are the only things that really need regular ironing, and if we hang them up when they're still warm, even they don't need it. I iron if things look like they need it, but that's it. I don't generally buy high-maintenance clothes, because I don't want to spend my time dealing with them!

Tell Us: The Laundry Nitty Gritty

I like folding laundry but not schlepping to and from the basement, so my husband schlepps and i fold and put away. I love grocery shopping and cooking, but I loathe dishes, so hubs does those. He hates putting away clean dishes, so I do that. I am bad at washing floors/vacuuming (I don't hate it, I'm just not very thorough) so he does that, but I tidy up - put away the piles that accumulate on the kitchen table, fold the couch blankets, make the bed, etc. Frankly, I think if we had a vacuum that didn't way ONE MILLION POUNDS and live behind something in an annoying closet I might not mind it so much. Instead, we just vacuum once a week. No pets, so it's just our own lint that collects, heh.

hanc - mint is one of those herbs that needs a ton of space. I had potted mint that came back year 2 (I left it outside over the winter as I did with the majority of my container garden), but year 2 it came back growing from around the edges of the pot. Year 3 it did as you're describing, and I did some research - after a couple of years in one pot, it stops performing well. If you change out the soil but put it back in the same pot it may do better, or change the pot and the soil.

I just canned a whole bunch of food for the first time yesterday. Mostly pickles and jam, but I also canned two tomato based things: spicy salsa and crushed tomatoes. I added commercial lemon juice to the crushed tomatoes and the salsa contains plenty of vinegar. I removed air bubbles before putting on the lids, but there are now air bubbles in the product. The lids pinged, so I know a seal was formed, but I have no idea if this is normal!
